How To Hear From God

One time during my teenage years, some older youth I used to look up to was giving a testimony. Somewhere in between, she goes…”So I said to God…. and God told me…” and I was like ‘these people have come again, how is it possible that she is saying she heard ‘God’…. the Almighty God! In my mind, I honestly thought she was either making it up or she didn’t know what she was saying. Maybe it was her mind talking and she was her lying against God. I guess that got me wondering how to hear from God.

The Bible makes us understand something about God… God actually speaks. Throughout the old testament, he spoke with his prophets and those cool guys like Moses, Abraham (Abraham is one of my favourite Bible characters!)… And even now, He still speaks to us! The plan of God for believers is not for us to go to a pastor or prophet every time we want to make a decision or ascertain the will of God in a matter.

God has called us to a personal relationship….  so God expects that we are able to speak to Him and hear Him speak back to us. The office of a pastor, prophet, apostle and all those other offices in this matter is to confirm what you have heard from God and strengthen your convictions. We have as much access to God as they do. The only difference is they have exercised themselves unto godliness and hence built such a relationship with God. But guess what? You too can!

I’m going to pause here to explain something about this ‘speaking’. One of the things I battled with growing up and what so many believers today still battle with is this ‘speaking’. Many expect an audible voice. Like a roaring thunder or someone just calls your name that your physical ears actually hear. Now, that does happen but that’s not regular.

God speaks to us majorly through His word and by His Spirit.

Both working hand in hand… meaning as you study the Word, the Holy Spirit gives you revelation knowledge, interpreting it to you. In the same vein, when the Holy Spirit speaks to us… It is always in line with the Word of God.

As believers, Jesus sent us the Holy Spirit when He departed. “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you”(John 14:26, NKJV).

The Holy Spirit is to lead us, guide us, instruct us, remind us of the things in the Word, help us and strengthen us on this journey. The voice of God is actually the Holy Spirit’s leading and impression in our hearts. This is the God’s primary means of leading a believer.  It is HIM who reveals the mind of God in our hearts.

So what must we do? Here’s How to Hear From God

Firstly, immerse yourself in God’s Word.

I once read somewhere, when you seem to not hear God, study His Word. Because that is His voice penned down. And when the Holy Spirit would speak to you, it would be in line with the Word of God. Just as the Holy Spirit speaks to our spirit, so also the devil whispers. You only would be able to tell the difference when you know God’s word. Whatever you hear in your spirit man, you would need to ensure it is not against the Word of God, hence the need for you to know the Word.

Secondly, engage the Holy Spirit!

See, the more room we give the Holy Spirit in our lives, the more sensitive and familiar we become with His voice. The bible says in John 10:27: “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:” The relationship between God and us is as likened to that of a shepherd and his sheep. You’d see how closely the sheep follow the shepherd. They literally do not do anything except they get a prompt from the shepherd. That is how God expects that we relate to Him.

It is not until you want to get married that you start fasting and going to Badagry and other mountain-like areas and doing all sorts to hear from God. Click To Tweet

If you do not hear from God in the little details and choices of your life, when the major ones come… it may be difficult. Because in that instance, even the devil may speak and because you do not know the voice of God or how He relates to you personally, you would not be able to tell the difference.

Constant fellowship and daily communion with the Holy Spirit sharpens our sensitivity.

In conclusion, the problem is not that God is not speaking. The issue is you are not hearing. A radio station is on all day long but until you tune in, you would not know what is going on there.

Intentionality is key. Be deliberate about it. God is not so far-fetched… He is not at all. He has promised that when we seek Him, We would find Him. I believe Him wholeheartedly… Do you?

We would love to answer any questions you have on this subject in the comment section.. you can also tell us your own journey of hearing God…. how God speaks to you.

Shalom!
