The Message Abraham Heard – Emmanuel Iren

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” – Ephesians 1:3

Today’s text tells us that in Christ, we are blessed with all spiritual blessings of heaven. The Greek word for ‘blessed’ is Eulogeo, which is the word from which the English word ‘Eulogize’ is birthed.

The man in Christ is ‘spoken well of’ by God.

This emphasizes the righteous status of the man in Christ. The next verses further explain:

“According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love.” So you see that the context of the spiritual blessings in this discourse is righteousness. We are made righteous in Christ: “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace – Ephesians 1:7

As far as sin is concerned, the man in Christ is covered by faith.

This was God’s promise to Abraham. God said to him: “…and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed” – Genesis 12:3.

Paul referred to this text and explained it thus: “And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed” – Galatians 3:8.

Christ was that seed of Abraham in whom all the nations of the earth were to be blessed.

“Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ” – Galatians 3:16.

In other words, Ephesians 1:3 is the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham. The gospel of our justification in Christ, the seed of Abraham, was first preached to Abraham himself.

“And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the GOSPEL unto Abraham…” (Galatians 3:8).

Abraham believed it. Do you?
