What Do You Do When You Don’t Feel Like Praying?

What do you do when you don’t feel like praying?

For those days when you can’t bring yourself to pray?  Or those days when the words are caught up in your throat but refuse to come out?

For those days when your heart is full, but your mouth is empty or those days when you are tired and out of breath…

For those days when you honestly don’t feel like praying or doing anything church?

For those days that you can’t seem to get out of bed, get on your knees and open your heart to talk to Jesus? What do you do?

What do you do on those dry days?

First, it’s important to note that as believers we are Spirit beings and we ought to function that way. Hence, we don’t live our lives based on how we feel. We do what needs to be done regardless of our feelings. A great example is praying. It doesn’t matter whether you feel like praying or not. Prayer is an essential part of your spiritual growth and it must be done.

You can keep complaining about a dry prayer life. But until you stand up to pray, it won't go. You just get praying even if you don't feel like it, your body and mind would catch up. Click To Tweet

I wish I could tell you five steps on how to pray when you don’t feel like praying. But the truth is the only cure there is to prayerlessness is prayer. You can keep complaining about a dry prayer life. But until you stand up to pray, it won’t go. And we can’t even afford to wait for feeling to pray before we pray.. We pray to feel to pray. You just get praying, your body and mind would catch up.

Here’s a few tips to get you started:

1. Try Playing Music.

Music that reminds of who you are, whose you are, who He is and why you should pray in the first place.

2. Try Talking to Him as Opposed to the Praying.

Well, we know prayer is talking to God. But sometimes we tend to forget down. So calm down with all the prayer gymnastics you may know and just talk to God as you would a friend. Tell him how you feel and how you can’t seem to pray. It’s in that moment of dependence that passion wells up from within you.

3. Listen to Someone Pray or Pray with Someone.

Fervour is contagious, it is like a current. It’s almost inevitable for you to pray along when someone is fervently praying with you, either virtually or physically.

The only cure there is for prayerlessness is prayer. You don't feel like praying? Pray! Pray and pray until all you want to do is pray. That's the only way out Click To Tweet

4. Write Him a letter.

No one ever said prayer has to be done with spoken words and bowed knees. Sometimes, written words and a bowed heart is enough to pull you out of that prayer rut.

5. Read Your Bible.

To get prayer right, you must stay edified! You must stay ablaze! The Word of God is edifying and stirs us up to pray. Knowledge provokes communication, the more you know about God, the more you can to say to him in prayer.

6. Say Thank You.

Instead of asking for this and that, or interceding for someone, (not that these things are bad) count the blessings that he has granted you and appreciate him. A thankful heart deepens intimacy which is really the goal.

7. Pray!

For emphasis, when you don’t feel like praying that is when you should pray! Remember that you are not led by your feelings. You control your flesh. You are not subject to its likes or dislikes. You are led by God’s spirit. You do what it needs, which is bible study and prayer! You’re in a love relationship with Abba and communication is key. He wants to know your thoughts. He wants to hear your voice. Our Father is not indifferent to our silence. Pray hard and pray long.
