I watched this movie with really high expectations, and thankfully, those expectations were met and even exceeded. The movie runs for a total of 2 hours 7 minutes, and I must confess that those were the best 2 hours and 7 minutes of my life spent watching a movie.
Now I am not a feminist, but this movie showed me that women (or anyone else for that matter) can be whatever they want to be. The movie was set in 1961, when the segregation of whites and colored people was the order of the day. But notwithstanding the many challenges that came with being colored, three amazing African-American women – Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson) – a mathematician, Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) – a mathematician and a supervisor, and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae) – who had to take night classes in order to become an engineer, went ahead to make groundbreaking achievements in NASA which helped win the space race.
They refused to be limited by the color of their skin, and this was what made them strive harder and harder to get to seemingly unachievable heights for colored people.
I’m going to stop my story-telling here before I get too excited and spoil the show for those who have not seen the movie, but one thing I learnt from this movie was that-
“The value you add to whomever you come across, or wherever you find yourself, is what keeps you relevant.”
Hidden Figures was chosen by the National Board of Review as one of the top ten films of 2016, and was nominated for numerous awards, including three Oscars (Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Octavia Spencer) and two Golden Globes (Best Supporting Actress for Octavia Spencer and Best Original Score). It won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.
With a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (wow!), this movie is one you really don’t want to overlook.
With all these plenty, plenty nominations, awards and wonderful reviews, I hope I have been able to convince and not confuse you that the movie is so worth the watch.
