3 Things To Learn From Apostle John

Apostle John was a notable disciple of Jesus. He and his brother, James were originally fishermen before Jesus called them to follow Him; And they eventually grew to be among the closest people to Jesus.

Apostle John was present as the transfiguration. He was with Jesus when Jairus’ daughter was healed, and was also in the garden of Gethsemane when Jesus went to pray (Matthew 26:36). These just go to show the close relationship he had with the Messiah.

It is important to add that this John is different from John the Baptist, the cousin of Jesus, whose job was to prepare the way for his coming. Apostle John authored 5 books in the Bible, from which we benefit today. Also, he cared about the errors that the Church had believed and sought to correct them.

In addition, Apostle John was instrumental to the spread and growth of the early church, and is believed to have authored 5 books of the New Testament namely: John, First, Second and Third John, and Revelation.

Without further ado, here are 3 things to learn from Apostle John:

1. He was secure in his identity.

John doesn’t mention his name in the synoptic gospel he wrote. Instead, he refers to himself as “the disciple Jesus loved” (John 13:23), and that’s something to note down.

John could’ve simply talked about himself in other ways, but decided to refer to himself as one loved by Jesus.

Are you conscious of your identity? How convinced are you of this truth? Learn to talk about yourself like that! The creator of everything, the richest/most influential/most powerful man is your daddy! He says He loves you, that’s a big deal.

Like John, choose to see yourself through God’s eyes.

2. John was a preacher of love.

In several portions of his books, John wrote about God’s love for us, our love for Christ, and for each other. In his letters, He constantly reminded the people of who they are in Christ, and the responsibility that follows as a result.

For example, in John 3:16, he tells us that God demonstrated His love for us by sending Jesus to die so we can have eternal life. And in other places like 1 John 3:14-16, He shows us how this affects our own relationships with people.

3. John showed commitment to ministry.

Not only did John show commitment to Jesus when he was on earth, but he also showed commitment to God’s business even after.

We see from the scriptures that He, with Peter and James, played a vital role in the building and spread of the Early Church (Gal 2:7-9). He and Peter were sent to new believers in Samaria so he could lay hands on them to receive the Spirit (Acts 8:14-25). And they both preached the gospel in many other Samaritan villages.

Like John, show commitment to God’s work, and show consistent devotion.

These are just a few of the things to learn from Apostle John. Let us know other things one can learn from the life and ministry of this apostle.
