3 Things To Learn From Apostle Peter

The Apostle Peter is an iconic symbol in the Christian faith. He was one of the twelve apostles selected by Jesus Christ (Matthew 10:1-2). Also, He ranked high as one of the foremost voices in the development of Christian thought, especially around the ancient Jewish world.

Apostle preached the very first sermon after the giving of the Spirit on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2). And it was on the foundation of Peter’s influence that Mark wrote his synoptic gospel (Mark). In addition to this, Peter has the authorship of two epistles (1st and 2nd Peter) to his credit.

There are a number of lessons to learn from the life of Apostle Peter, but below are a few of them:

1. Boldness

For a man who was previously just a fisherman, Peter was quite outspoken. He exuded so much confidence and was not scared to speak out his beliefs. It was Peter who confidently asserted that Jesus was the Christ (Matthew 16:15-17). It was Peter who asked to walk on water with Jesus (Matthew 14:25-29).

As earlier mentioned, it was Peter who preached the first sermon after the Holy Spirit fell on the day of Pentecost, this was done in response to claims of drunkenness (Acts 2). Peter’s boldness was despite his background and an important proof that he had encountered Jesus (Acts 4:13). Every believer should be like Peter; you cannot encounter Jesus and be timid.

2. Believe in the Supernatural

In a day and age where people discredit the supernatural, the life of Peter is proof that we can still contend for the supernatural today. The same Holy Spirit that worked in Peter to heal a lame man (Acts 3:2-10), is the same Holy Spirit in every believer today. God worked so mightily in the life of Peter that his shadow healed the sick (Acts 5:15-16). If we believe in the same Jesus that Peter believed in, we must insist on the supernatural today.

3. An Understanding of Grace

Peter showed an understanding of God’s grace in the way he reacted to denying Jesus. Despite being confident that he would not, Jesus had prophesied that he (Peter) would deny Him three times, after His arrest (Matthew 26:34). True to Jesus’ words, Peter denied Him three times (Matthew 26:69-74). Yet, Peter’s response to his realization that he had denied Jesus  was remorse (Acts 26:75). And that is how we must respond when we do things that are not pleasing to God.

As believers, we must never get comfortable with doing things that displease our Lord and saviour. But Peter did not wallow in this state of remorse. In this respect Judas was radically different from Peter, Judas allowed his grief to lead him to take his life. Peter was willing to move ahead from the pain he felt from denying his savior, to doing the will of God. This is the balance of grace, we feel bad when we sin, but we never remain in that state.
