5 Things to Learn from Jesus

WHAT WOULD JESUS DO? This, or maybe is a common catchphrase I heard often while growing up. The Bible in many places shows us that we should be imitators of Christ, following His footsteps as the perfect example of how and who we ought to be in this world, and we’re looking at 5 ways that we can follow His example. Things we should learn and emulate from Jesus.

So, here are 5 Things to Learn from Jesus

1. Mind the Father’s business.

“My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. – John 4:34 NIV

Jesus was all about the father’s business. He was a man on a mission, He knew His role in the grand plan of God and he was focused and sold out. He did all that God would have Him do. He spoke about the Father boldly and didn’t live for the applause of men.

He understood God’s salvation plan, told people about it, taught the people about Jesus and left us with the instruction to preach the gospel to all nations.

And this is not an attribute that is exclusive to Jesus alone. If we truly understand and believe that we are bought with a price, then we should know that our life does not belong to us anymore. The believer today is a bondservant to God, living his/her every breath for the will and purpose of God.

He died for everyone so that those who receive his new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them. – 2 Cor 5:15

2. Pray.

Jesus not only taught on prayer, but He was also a man of prayer- Matt 14:23, Mark 6:46, Luke 22:32.

He prayed in times of deep pain and sorrow like the garden of Gethsemane, He prayed and gave thanks to God different times, He prayed alone sometimes, He prayed with people, and for people as well.

He set aside time to pray many times as “God” as He was, which sets an example for us to follow. If there is one man who need not to pray, it should be Jesus, but he prayed. Jesus’ devotion to prayer and communion with the Father shows how important that is to our Christian walk, and this is one thing we must learn from Him.

It is very unlikely that you have a more busy schedule than Jesus had, travelling from place to place preaching and healing with crowds always flocking after him. Yet, he still had a consistent prayer devotion. We don’t have any excuse.

3. Act in love.

We see Jesus healing people because He has compassion for them. In fact, the very people that nailed Him to the cross and humiliated Him are the same people He was dying for on the cross but that didn’t make Him change His mind. He accepted and allowed different people to come to him without segregation.

In Mark 8:2 Jesus cared about them hearing His teachings but He also cared that they hadn’t eaten, love moved Him to multiply bread.

Jesus treated people with grace, He didn’t meet the adulterous woman and insult her for her wrong, He was without sin yet He didn’t cast any stone. He met the woman at the well, knew all about her past but didn’t jump at her with all the things she did “in secret” that He knew about, instead, He engaged her in a conversation and told her what was most important- that eternal life was available, even for her.

Love people like Christ loved people. Learn love from Jesus.

4. Be relationship conscious.

Jesus ate with sinners, healed many people, taught the multitude but when it was time to pray He had people He prayed with, He had people he was consistently seen with, His inner circle. Those were the people He called out specifically, the ones that agreed to follow Him in doing the Fathers will.

Jesus had friends, so much that he cried when he saw the friends and family of his friend Lazarus cry cos he died.

A follower of Jesus cannot be a loner because Jesus was not a loner, he was the opposite. As much as he had many times alone in fellowship with the father, he had times with people also. We saw him visit the family of the disciples who worked with him. We saw him honour the invitation of people who wanted him to come to dine at their houses.

Jesus valued relationships, you should also.

5. Be confident in God’s ability in and through you.

Jesus turned water to wine, healed the sick, multiplied bread and fish amongst many other miracles He performed.
Jesus was confident in God’s power at work in Him and so He was bold to do those things. We once saw him reprimand his followers for getting anxious over the thought of the lack of bread. He said they should know by now that doing miracles like multiplying bread is not a problem. We saw another time he called them people of little faith for panicking and waking him up in the middle of a storm.

Jesus never for once doubted the power he carried and what he was capable of doing. You have His spirit in you, so you should be confident in God’s power at work in you also.
