5 WAYS TO BE MORE LIKE CHRIST

“Every time I feel the spirit moving in my heart I will pra-a-ay, Lord I want to be like Jesus in my heart, in my heart, Lord I want to be like Jesus in my heart”.

You must have sung this song a couple of times in your life- maybe at school, Sunday school, or at family devotions. You are probably singing it right now. When these lines come from a sincere heart that loves Jesus Christ and wants to be like Him, this song conveys our desire to be one with Him.

You know how teachers give examples while teaching so that you can grasp the topic better, and ultimately begin to apply it? That is what the Bible has also done. It has given us the qualities of Jesus for us to emulate and replicate.

Some of these qualities will be listed below for us to learn from, and then replicate. Please do read with a heart willing to learn.

  1. Extravagant Love:

“And one of them struck at the high priest’s slave, slashing off his right ear. But Jesus said, “No more of this.” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him – Luke 22: 50-51 (NLT)

We know that Jesus had and still has amazing power, and in the scenario above, he could’ve chosen to go into ‘hulk smash’ mode, but he didn’t. Rather, he did the unexpected and showed love by fixing the soldier’s ear. This simple, yet immense act of kindness shows that Jesus had love for EVERYONE, even those who sought him out to hurt him. That is a character worth emulating, be like Jesus and show love to EVERYONE.

  1. Empathy

Jesus wept” – John 11:35 (NLT)

Jesus was one to always identify with the feeling of others. Now, this does not mean that you should go around feeling sorry for every single person. It just means that when we identify with the feelings of others, we might be able to help them feel better. In the passage above, Jesus wept because of the death of his friend Lazarus. He identified with the sorrow Martha felt, and was able to help out by bringing Lazarus back to life.

  1. Consistency in the word

“But Jesus told him, No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone.’” – Luke 4:4 (NLT)

“Jesus replied, “The scriptures say, ‘You must worship the LORD your God and serve only Him.’” – Luke 4:8 (NLT)

Jesus responded, “The scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the LORD your God.’” – Luke 4:12 (NLT)

Although Jesus is the word, he did not become lackadaisical about feeding on it. Many times in scripture, we see him quote or make reference to the scripture. This should stir us to constantly feed off of the word. When Jesus was being tempted by the devil, he used the word to overcome temptation. How do you hope to be more like Christ and overcome temptation if you do not feed constantly on the word?

  1. Forgiveness:

Jesus said, “Father forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing” And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice. – Luke 23:34 (NLT)

This is just one of the many examples of Jesus showing forgiveness. I totally understand that sometimes we find it hard to completely forgive people who hurt us (trust me, I know), but here is Jesus, already nailed to the cross and yet still showing forgiveness, what a wow!

If He could show forgiveness even at that point in His life, how much we who are offended by minor offenses? Someone insulted you? Let it go. Someone abused you sexually? As difficult as it might seem, please, let it go as well.

Remember that line in the Lord’s prayer? “..and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us..” if you desist from forgiving others, you will cause God to hold back his forgiveness from you.

  1. Humility

So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him. – John 13:4-5 (NLT)

Jesus Christ, son of God, Jesus who brought people back from the dead, Jesus who could turn water into wine washing peoples’ feet???? Whattttt?. If that isn’t humility, then I really don’t know what it is.

If Jesus could show such an extreme level of humility, what is your excuse?

To be more like Christ, we have to consciously make efforts to get off our high horses and begin to practically ooze humility from our pores. You cannot be like Christ if you cannot be humble. Remember “True humility and fear of the Lord lead to riches, honour, and long life” – Proverbs 22:4 (NLT)

Since the goal is to be more like christ, then we must live lives of humility which are worthy of emulation.
