Dear God,

I feel overwhelmed today. I get to have lots of people talk about how sacrificial I am, how motherly I am, how I think about every single person’s welfare, how very sensitive and emotional and somewhat dramatic I can be. They say I am deeply lovable. And it seems as though I am best at giving love. I have grown to think of myself this way too. But there are times I feel like I’m just but a sounding cymbal.

Papa, a part of me feels a deep vacuum. It seems no one has ever attempted to fill it in. Every other aspect of my life looks full of light; it’s blissful and I enjoy it; well, there’s a hint of selfishness and the dire need to be noticed and recognized sometimes. But, this part, my love life feels dead. The irony, isn’t it? I profess to expressing love to people around me, but my love life feels dead. Why do I feel this way?

My Dear Child,

Hmmmm… That’s some deep stuff I hear! (chuckles)

You see, My child, you have the heart of Love. But your heart functions like the heart of Human. Remember the study you did on the heart and the blood circulatory system? The human heart pumps at higher pressure to release life (oxygenated) blood to the entire body. However, it receives dead (de-oxygenated) blood from the body, at lower pressure.

Actually, this is not how My Body is expected to function. Sadly, she does. You seem to have forgotten that at Redemption, there was a Heart Transplant. I gave you My Heart so you can have the capacity to Love like I do.

My heart releases Life, and because nothing dead can ever be found in Me, I only receive Life. I own it in the first place anyways (*grins*). Darkness and death can’t exist where there’s Light, Life and Love. So, the only thing that My Body gives and receives in a continuous cycle of system is Light, Life and Love.

Here’s the real irony. My Body has become “comfortable”. No pressure, no pumping, just dead lifeless and loveless flow. If you really want to operate with My Heart, you have to be uncomfortable; high pressure pumps, both ways and nothing else.

That’s the same thing I will say about your love life. But first, let’s get one main thing straight (winks).

That vacuum is called the need for companionship, and I am the Only One that can fill that deep vacuum beyond satisfactory level. The Potter knows best how to handle His clay. Why not let our hearts be in sync; and we pump in rhythms together. It’s uncomfortable in the sense of the world, but only you and I know how so much comfort it is been in each other’s arms.

Your love life, in the light of all that I have said, won’t feel or look dead. Just as My Heart pumps for yours, and yours for Mine, that would be the story of your love life. You both would not just only fill each other’s vacuum, but you will be as in sync as we both are, that the world would think it as awkward and sense it as highly uncomfortable.

You would want nothing more than to be “awkward” and “uncomfortable” together, with Me in the Big Picture. Now, that’s what a relationship (love life – marriage) in the light of Eternity should reflect.

Awesome, right? (laughs).

pastor-emmanuel-iren-111gods‘ was used to describe people who issued decrees on God’s behalf in the Old Testament. All popularly misunderstood texts are clear on this.

Beginning from Exodus 7:1 that says: “And the LORD said unto Moses, See, I have made thee a god to Pharaoh: AND AARON THY BROTHER SHALL BE THY PROPHET“.

From this, it should already be clear that the ‘title‘ referred to how he will function and not who he is. Like ‘god’, he will issue decrees which will be communicated by Aaron…his ‘prophet‘.

The next verse clarifies: “Thou shalt speak all that I command thee: and Aaron thy brother shall speak unto Pharaoh…” – Exodus 7:1-2.

This story would have been consistent with popular present day theology if Aaron was also called “god”, and in fact, the entire camp of Israelites. But they weren’t because it was a ‘title‘ for magistrates. Or, are some of us gods and others prophets and the rest…just there? Not so.

This was the exact case in Psalm 82:6. To whom did it refer? Magistrates. Check the context: “God standeth in the congregation of the mighty; he judgeth among the gods. HOW LONG WILL YE JUDGE unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked? Selah.

Psalm 82:1-2. Again here, not everyone was called gods, but the judges, and so because their commands were to be honoured as the very commands of God.

In reference to this text, Jesus said, “…he called them gods UNTO WHOM THE WORD OF GOD CAME…” – John 10:35.

Paul communicates this idea thus: “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. WHOSOEVER THEREFORE RESISTETH THE POWER, RESISTETH THE ORDINANCE OF GOD: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.” – Romans 13:1-2.

That’s how honorable judges are. They are Gods representatives. Calling them ‘gods’ is actually mere figure of speech.

The closest way to relate this to a believer is to say we are ambassadors for Christ. But never, was anyone called god because of the life he carried. Instead they are reminded that they will die like men.

It was always about one thing that my heart knew but my head never really could understand.
It was always about a presence so overwhelming the entirety of my being couldn’t withstand.
It was always about a confidence in the love gotten in God’s presence that in Jesus name I stand.
It was always about a knowledge that regardless of habits and disbelief, a perfect relationship in Christ I have, my flight cannot land.
Now I an understand my identity.
I am the son of a king, I have power, a reliable strong and sound mind.
I am the son of the king, I have authority with my father’s name so when I ask I find.
I am the son of the king, born to live noble, to serve, give value, respect other and be kind.
I am the son of the king, I have royal blood, irrespective of bad behaviour my home still remains the kingdom.
I am the son of the king with born with a spirit that resists negativity and failure I have liberty and freedom.
I am the son of the wise king bless with riches, privileges, experiences, guidance and wisdom.
I finally understand who I am.
I am the predestined, the called, the justified. I am the glorified, I am the proud son of the king of kings..

Wait, don’t FAINT.

tumblr_o8ro8m6jri1tfmdcao1_500When I listened to the story behind this song, they spoke about the Israelites going through the red sea. It was the moment they left their slavery and became the children of God. They saw a massive love of a Father who would part the red sea and bring them into the promised land. I thought about how amazing God’s love is and I remembered the scripture Gal 4:7 ” Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child and since you are his child, God has made you his heir”.
I realized that when I believe there is a God and I receive him to my life, I become God’s own, every form of fear, pain or struggles I have battled with is no longer mine because he takes it all away and gives me a new birth in him.
This song gave me a clear understanding of John 1:12-13 that says “But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God, they are reborn not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan but a birth that comes from God.”
Therefore, since I have accepted the call of salvation and received Christ as my Lord, I’ve become a new creature, reborn in Christ and I’m born again into God’s family. I’m his child and he loves me. I can cast all my cares and fears to him because I know he listens.
img_1031The bridge says “You split the seas so I could walk right through it, my fears are drowned in perfect love“. I’m so sure the Israelites were scared when they got to the red sea and would never have thought they could pass through. Yet, they remembered they had a father who loved with a perfect love, saw them through Egypt and brought them out for a purpose would yet again help them pass through and they called on him and he made a way.

No matter the storms of life you face or go through, Remember as Christians we are now God’s children. Never doubt his love for you and know he will see you through and help calm whatever storm.

You unravel me with a melody
You surround me with a song
Of deliverance from my enemies
‘Til all my fears are gone[2x]
I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of GodFrom my mother’s womb
You have chosen me
Love has called my name
I’ve been born again
Into your family
Your blood flows through my veins[4x]
I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God
I am surrounded
By the arms of the father
I am surrounded
By songs of deliverance
We’ve been liberated
From our bondage
We’re the sons and the daughters
Let us sing our freedom
You split the sea
So I could walk right through it
My fears were drowned in perfect love
You rescued me
And I could stand and sing
I am a child of God…
Yes, I am
I am a child of God
I am a child of God
Yes, I am
I am a child of God
Full of faith
Yes, I am a child of God
I am a child of God
I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God

A lady currently has 3 guys who have said they are interested in her and they love her. Please how can she choose rightly?

Well, to be straightforward and blunt, if a gun is pointed to her head to choose one, she definitely will make a choice. However without that extreme measure, the lady should be guided by the one that is Vision-driven and also sees her Vision together with his.  And he has to be saved.

The truth is, girls know after a while who they can spend the rest of their life with and who they can’t. Although, a great number of ladies indulge in self-deception which gets them to ignore the handwritings on the wall when making their choices about the life partners. So they marry a rich and he ends up being a Wife beater or they marry an influential guy who cares nothing for them.

So ladies, you have to be honest to yourself and to your purpose and vision and carefully choose the guy that aligns to your Identity and your Purpose. And of course to guide you in your choice.

Nathaniel Bassey in Worship
Nathaniel Bassey in Worship

The music world has series of depths. Some depths are easily accessible, because it’s within reach. But there’s one depth… It calls one’s soul to the deeps of the supernatural.

Amongst the very few that have discovered this particular depth, is one seemly ordinary young man, with a heart burning with love’s fire and fury for God, who, on this week issue of #MCM, is our Man Crush this week.

Nathaniel Bassey  started out life like the average Nigerian kid, born in Lagos to Mr E Joshua Bassey, who was a minister in The Apostolic Church Bashua Assembly. From an early age he developed a love for music .

He was inspired when He saw Dr Panam Percy Paul, a prominent Nigerian gospel music icon in concert over twenty years ago and since then, his passion for music has grown and translated into various musical experiences.

Excellence has always been his desire in all he did even though he didn’t start out as a gospel musician/songwriter.

He had grown up loving jazz music and as a result had joined a top jazz quartet in Lagos, Spectrum 4, where he played alongside his childhood friends.

About that time, he was approached by one of the most respectable figures in the Nigerian jazz and music circle, Elder Steve Rhodes to lead, arguably, the first Jazz Orchestra in the country – THE STEVE RHODES OCHESTRA. He served as band leader and lead trumpet player for a period of two years and later moved on with his music career.

His diligence and excellence paid off as the likes Teemac, Ayo Bankole Jr, Cobhams Asuquo, Wole Oni, Yinka Davies, Adlan Cruise, Funsho Ogundipe, Peter King, Sotiris Papadopoulus, Paul Petersen, The French Cultural centre, American International School, and more  individuals and organisations sought his musical ingenuity.

As time passed, Nathaniel began sensing a deep yearning within. There was more to his music than he thought.

He later took time off his numerous mainstream commitments to seek the Lord under the Mentorship and guidance of Late Pastor Eskor Mfon, the former Pastor of The Redeemed Christian Church Of God, City Of David Parish.

This decision attracted fierce criticisms from friends, Artistes and colleagues who thought it unthinkable abandoning what was becoming a thriving mainstream music career to serve exclusively at a local church.

Nathaniel said,

“My friends thought that I was crazy and wondered how such a talented boy would leave everything. But I thank the Lord that the story has changed because music was more than an item to fill a space in time. It is a fundamental tool in the praise and worship of the Lord.”

Soon after, a music ministry was born and for Nathaniel, the main thrust was WORSHIP – Music of Heaven – one that ministered exclusively to the Lord and an avenue through which HE related with His people.

His trumpet playing coupled with a calm singing style has since ushered many in concerts, crusades and churches into the presence of the LORD.His first album, Elohim, debuted in 2008.

His desire for excellence influences everything he does and the way he views things.

He believes that,

“As a worship leader, when you’re leading is not the time to show your vocal agility and ability. What is important at that time is to carry the congregation along in worship. I am part of the old school that believes that the sound of worship and gospel music should be different from that of secular music because music ministries is diametrically opposed to secular music.”

In relation to the different disciplines he has studied, he said,

“I believe God did not make mistakes by putting the human mind in us which is like elastic that stretches as you study and learn new things. I have always wanted to do music right from my early stage of life. I spent two years at the University of Lagos where I did a little bit in Urban and Regional Planning and later gained admission into University of London where I studied Politics and International Relations. I have done few courses in Music at the Middlesex University Summer School, UK, where I studied popular music and a little bit of music business and I graduated as the best student from the school.”

Nathaniel Bassey also added that,

“Worshiping God is my lifestyle.  I believe in being simple and accessible. It is all about being an ordinary human doing extraordinary things with the grace and anointing of God.”

We celebrate Nathaniel Bassey because his life proves to us that anyone can be extraordinary. All one needs to do is diligently apply oneself to whatever it could be; job, career, academics etc. Nathaniel is a good role model of academic excellence, excellence in ministry and pursuit of career.

Lecrae: A Blessing in the Good, Bad, Ugly

A scene from Independence Day: Resurgence

I recently watched the movie “Independence Day Resurgence” and I couldn’t help but wonder. Why don’t we have Alien Invasion movies where the Aliens win and succeed in taking over earth and the whole human race? Why do Humans seem to win all the time?

Few weeks after my wondering session, I finally finished another movie titled “Batman Vs. Superman” and I have yet another question; are there really super humans among us, gods in the form of men? By the way, I am not referring to David’s Psalm “ye are gods”. I mean, flying, eye-laser shooting, incredibly strong men.

I do not deny the possibility that there are researches going on (or maybe even concluded) in America or other technological advanced nations like Russia and North Korea on human enhancements as an attempt to build super soldiers.

These activities are very plaudable as it has become necessary to prepare for even the tiniest possibility of an alien invasion. The real question therefore is this, what will save mankind and our blue planet from such probable terror?

Okay, back to my Independence Day Resurgence thoughts.

The Justice League

Do men have what it takes to face an alien invasion? Do we have super heroes; Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Avengers, X-men…that will stand and defend us against these cruel creatures? (Pardon my description of the aliens but movies always project them as ugly).

What if there already is an alien invasion without the giant space ship from the outer space or Ultron-like robots? What if the aliens were so minute and totally invisible to the eyes? Aliens that are not after man’s destruction, the alienation of the human race or a mission to take over planet earth, but one after the integral part of our individual existence, the human soul?

Who then will fight this war?

These movies make me ask a question among others; could it mean that earth wasn’t meant to be forever?

Could sin be an alien from outer space that has successfully possessed and controlled, depraved and ruined humanity? Could it?

Then we need a super hero, we need a savior, someone who like our Marvel & DC comic heroes will stand and fight to rescue us. Or maybe we have one, God in the flesh, God among us, who from another place had to take the form of the human being from a woman’s womb and be born; Jesus.

A savior who instead of swords and guns, used the cross as his weapon to fight this alien. He seemed to lose because the wages of sin is death, and in fighting for us, He died. To shock the world, He resurrected on the third day declaring He has the keys to hell and death.

Marvel, DC comics and the likes are fairy tales, stories, result of human imagination, but Jesus, His birth, life, crucifixion and resurrection aren’t fiction, but real events, so real that history has them recorded.

So, even though the world might not acknowledge, we need to ask, is there more to Jesus’s death and resurrection?

I attended ‘’I am Art’’, an Art exhibition showcasing Christian Artists, on the  4th November 2016, and it inspired me to share my thoughts and my journey with Art.

Cross Section of Participants at I Am Art Exhibition
Cross Section of Participants at I Am Art Exhibition

I love Art; every single one of its expression and I enjoy the process of studying a work of Art arriving at a conclusion and realizing that the work of Art tells a beautiful story of reality.

I started journaling in my second year in Secondary school; my mum bought me a hard cover notebook in which I documented my life and thoughts. I kept my journal hidden safely tucked between my textbooks at the bottom of my desk. But nothing really stays hidden in secondary school and people started reading my thoughts and connecting with the words I wrote. So I shared with a few people and disappeared into my shell after any form of criticisms.

I made sense of the world on the pages of  my journals so naturally that when I started a relationship with God I wrote about it. Now I had two journals; one for my thoughts about my budding relationship with God and the other for developing stories, poems and essays on life.

At the time, I was of the opinion that I could easily separate the two, lead two lives, one that was dedicated to my relationship to God and another that stayed true to my artistic freedom. I called it compartmentation

Two things are important in the life of every Christian;

  •  Making the decision to love God, accepting God’s love, and,
  • To Grow in God’s Love; understanding that the new creature you have become on the day you accept God’s Love needs to be nurtured.

The second is not easy to learn, “understand and walk in”, because it involves leaving things you know and love. So we all rationalize growth in God’s love; we walk with one foot in the love of God and the other in the things of the world we are not willing to let go of. One can only walk like this for so long, gradually your feet will move in one direction.

I eventually learnt the second and began to walk in it and keep just one journal understanding that my Art expression is for the Lord’s use.

Panels and Moderator At The Event
Panels and Moderator At The Event

So back to ‘’I Am Art’’ the host asked the question, ‘’Do you think Mali Music is still a Christian?’’ This is a very controversial topic and one I have listened to a number of debates on.

I don’t enjoy having these type of conversations so I walked to the food stand and got myself a hotdog and a drink, found a seat at the back of the room and asked the audience the following questions in my head;

  • Have you forgotten Christianity is an individual walk?
  • Do you realize that we will be judged based on our action and how those actions affect others?

I believe when we find, understand and accept the answers to these questions, we will stop having these conversations.

At my seat at the back of the room, a guy got up to contribute to the conversation; ‘’I am an artist, I paint nude portraits, photographs and write song and I am a Christian and I believe I am going to heaven. We are allowed to express our art however we see fit once we have a rock solid relationship with God’’. He finished and went back to taking photos.

I proceeded to ask him the following questions in my head;

  • Do the subjects you paint flash through your mind when you worship/pray?
  • Are you not causing a fellow men to sin when they see your paintings
  • Are you sure that you have never felt the leading not to paint nude subject again?
  • Does your art express Christ?

When I finished my hotdog and drink, I said goodnight to my friends and left the exhibition.

I left the place thinking about a poem I wrote when I started my journey with God. It was inspired by a spoken word I listened to at the time on creativity and how God is the Master Artist, Creator carefully designing everything for a purpose.

We are Christians, which means everything we do should be Christ like and our art should express Christ.

The conversation we should be having is ‘’Does your art express Christ? Does it edify the body of Christ? Does it draw people to the body of Christ?’

We find these answers when we walk and grow in God’s love. We need to stop feeding ourselves with the milk of the word; a person can only stay a babe for so long. We need to desire growth and accept the shedding of the flesh that comes with it.

I am first a Christian, every other expression of myself is expected to channel Christianity.

So I am Oreoluwa, I am a Christian, I am a writer, I am a sister, I am a friend, I am an Accountant, I am a wife, I am a mother and I am a daughter.

How do you handle sexual temptations?
Have you found yourself repeatedly battling a seemingly insurmountable sexual urge? You’re so embarrassed you cannot even talk to anyone about it? Here is what to do;

1. Trust God

We serve the God who “…delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked” 2 Peter 2:7.

In Sodom and Gomorrah where he lived, lewdness was the order of the day. Even homosexuals were happy and proud there. But God delivered Lot. He will deliver you. Trust Him. Jude says: “Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy” – Jude verse 24. That’s your God.

2. Deal with the source permanently

How did God deliver Lot? He gave him strength to overcome the temptation? No! God brought Lot out of Sodom and Gomorrah, and destroyed the place. What many of us are doing today is insisting on staying at Sodom in hope that God will give us the grace to overcome. But the instructions in this regard are consistent: “Flee fornication” 2 Cor 6:18, “Flee also youthful lusts:” 2 Timothy 2:22.

This might involve separating yourself from people who consistently lead you into sin. Don’t keep that phone number and lie to yourself that you will never call him/her over to your house again. Lose the number. Have you seen that you cannot trust yourself to use that social media app without visiting the wrong pages? You might be better off doing away with it altogether…at least for a while.

While it is good news that you were tempted and overcame, it is smart to not even put yourself in a position to be tempted in the first place. Don’t manage what must be destroyed.
