Benefits of Prayer to Everyday Life

Prayer is one of the most essential spiritual activities any Christian will ever partake in- and it is so because it involves fellowshipping with God. However, asides spiritual benefits- healthy spiritual lives and a vibrant relationship with God- it offers quite a lot of other benefits, and here are some of them:

1. Helps you to plan better: prayer helps you become a better planner.

There is something about praying about a decision or an endeavor you are about to embark on. Personally, while praying, enjoying God’s presence, praying in the spirit or confessing scriptures and singing songs, I receive specific directions on what I have prayed about or had in mind to do. Often times it comes as an inner witness and a clear knowing.

Are you at a point of confusion over an endeavor you are about to embark on? Do you feel stuck? Take out some time to pray. Spending time praying makes you more attentive and sensitive to God’s leading.

Every time Israel was to go into battle or take a major decision, they always sought God’s face. We see Jesus do the same- always withdrawing to pray. He once said “The things I see my Father do, that I do also” – this must be a result of his time spent praying.

2. Affords you the opportunity to know things before they happen.

I bet this is true for a lot of people who pray constantly. Prayer makes you more sensitive and more aware of God’s spirit that lives in you already. There is no limit to God’s knowledge. He is the Alpha and Omega- knowing the end from the beginning. Because He lives in us, we have access to that knowledge.

God led men in the Bible, showing them things to come and He still does that now. A lot of people complain about not hearing God’s voice. God has no issues talking- we are the one who needs to listen. We need to shut our ears from the noise and distractions and listen.

Prayer affords you this opportunity. Your focus is on God and you are better positioned to listen. One of the many benefits of prayer is knowing about what is going to happen or what lies ahead.

3. Helps you Suppress your Addictions

I have seen and read many ways to overcome addiction, but one way I have personally experienced victory over addiction is through prayer.

Most addictions are fleshy gratifications and are constantly at war with the Spirit. Think of it, when are you more liable to fall for a sexual sin? When you’ve fasted and prayed for some days or when you’ve spent the week watching porn or maybe even common Netflix series? What prayer does is similar to what happens when you exercise your muscle or your mind- it strengthens your spirit and weakens your fleshy tendencies.

When you consistently take arithmetic test and constantly review your multiplication tables, you answer basic arithmetic questions faster. When you’ve been carrying dumbbells and taking runs, you are in a better shape to lift heavier objects or stand longer on a queue. The same holds for prayers- you are able to exercise self-control better.

4. Be more productive.

An active and consistent prayer lifestyle makes you more productive in your everyday life. It works the same way meditation does in the secular world. Meditation is a concept that is broadly encouraged. I recently downloaded an efficiency app ‘Fabulous’ and one of the recommended tasks is meditation.

What prayer does is similar to meditation- it helps recalibrate you, redistributes your energy, eliminates tensions and stress. It helps you have a more positive outlook to life- especially when your prayer is full of confessions of who you are in God and what you are now capable of.

Cultivate a consistent prayer lifestyle and all these benefits and more will naturally follow.
