Book Review – ‘Not By Sight’ by Jon Bloom

The book “Not By Sight” was authored by Jon Bloom, the co-founder, and President of Desiring God, with a foreword by John Piper.

The book “Not By Sight: A Fresh Look At Old Stories of Walking By Faithtakes readers directly inside scriptural narrative and offers them a front row seat of observation.

Jon Bloom writes: “The purpose of this little book is to imaginatively reflect on the real experiences of real people in the bible in order to help you grasp and live what it means to “trust in the Lord with all your heart, and … not lean on your own understanding” (Prov 3:5). Its goal is to help you believe in Jesus while living in a very confusing and painful world. (Page 18)

The book is 210 pages long (e-book version) and broken down into 35 reflections, this book is one ‘little’ book that you cannot afford to overlook.

Each chapter can be read alone, and this makes it a wonderful option for use as a private devotional or for group study. At the end of the book, there is a general index which relates varying topics to the meditations in the book. There is also a scriptural index included that offers an opportunity for a personal study on faith.

The best part of the book is the author’s ability to retell seemingly popular stories from the bible with so much fun and creativity. He practically delves into the minds of the characters and enables the reader to identify with what was going on in the minds of the character at any given period. His creative story re-tellings are strictly scriptural but add in repetitive details in order to engage the readers’ imagination.

Each reflection begins with the retelling of a specific scripture passage and concludes with Jon Bloom’s meditation on the passage.

With reflections on stories such as –

  • ‘The Disabled Woman and Suffering’, from Luke 13:10-17,
  • ‘When Following Jesus Means Going Home’, from Luke 8:26-39,
  • ‘The Night The Angel Didn’t Come’, from Acts 12:1-2,

Jon Bloom answers questions commonly asked, and enlightens us on staying faithful when things get worse.

I’m going to stop here, so as not to spill the beans (or the rice).
