Christians In Sports – TIM TEBOW

The Christian athlete I will be talking of today engages in a sport most of us might not be familiar with, like I wasn’t until I was told about him. I became interested both in the sport and in the subject personality today and I have quickly come to love this athlete, who possesses a striking character. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, TIM TEBOW.

NAME: Timothy Richard Tebow

Date of Birth: August 14, 1987

Sport: American football

Position of play: Quarter back1

Though not known to many of us sports lovers in this part of the world, Tim Tebow is well over popular and also a role model in the “world power” country, the United States of America. He is known not only for his commitment to the sport he plies his trade in, but also his popularity is largely based on his strong Christian faith and beliefs.

Tim Tebow was born in the Philippines to Pamela Elaine and Robert Ramsey Tebow II who were Baptist missionaries in that country (so we conclude that he had a good Christian foundation/background). One of his biggest testimonies is that before becoming pregnant with him, Tim Tebow’s mother contracted amoebic dysentery and fell into a coma and it was during her recovery she found out she was pregnant. Because of the medication she was taking for recovery, she was advised to abort him because the medications would most likely affect him (Tim Tebow ) negatively and she could also end up having a still birth- but she refused.

As I like to mention, one of the proofs that Tim Tebow is a real believer and worshipper of God is he is known for painting verses of the scriptures just below his eyes with his favorite being JOHN 3:16 and because of this, JOHN 3:16 was the highest ranked Google search term for over 24 hours, generating over 90 million searches in the year 2009. What measure of impact- I am pretty sure within those 90 million searches, someone would have given his/her life to Christ.

In 2010 the NCAA (association in charge of American football in the USA) banned messages below the eyes. This rule was called “The Tebow rule”.

Tim Tebow is also known for “Tebowing”- a term generated from his name because of his special routine of praying on the field of play where he goes down on one knee with arm resting on the other bent knee to say a word of prayer. He has said in his interviews that this is to show his humility towards God, relying on him for strength whether he wins a game or not.

When Tim Tebow is not on the field of play, he is in the Philippines, where he preaches in schools and villages and also assists in medical care. Back at home in the U.S.A he has also preached in prisons, schools, and youth groups.

Tim Tebow has maintained a huge and firm stance on abstinence and virginity until marriage. This is coming from someone who lives in a country where pre-marital sex and teenage pregnancies are prevalent. In most of his interviews I have watched, he has never failed to mention the role God has played in his life and that of his family and he is always giving God thanks.

So I can say personally that Tim Tebow is in sports not just for the money and the love of it- but above all, to use it as a means to draw people, especially the lost close to God. Therefore, I can call him the Missionary sportsman or sportsman of God who has become a role model to a country who desperately needs one. I hope we have been encouraged and inspired by this article. Thank you for reading and God bless you.
