Christians on Twitter: the Rules of Engagement

On January 13, 2022, the Nigerian government lifted a six-month-old ban on Twitter. This was confirmed in a statement released on January 12, 2022 which confirmed that the social media company had promised to comply with all the rules set by the Nigerian government on how it should operate within the country. According to the statement, the initial ban was a response to the use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.

The lift of the ban came with mixed reactions, but most active users of the platform are excited that they no longer have to depend on Virtual Private Networks (VPN) to access the platform. Also, Twitter has said that they would have a presence in Nigeria soon, which is good news for those in the tech space.

Now that Twitter is back, it is a good time to remind believers of some important points to note in using the platform. Below are some points to note while engaging on Twitter:

– Guard Your Mind

Twitter is a bit more flexible than other social media platforms on the type of content it allows on its platform. Hence, almost anything can make its way to Twitter. When I say anything, I mean pornographic materials, Anti-Christ trends and campaigns e.t.c. As a believer, it is important to guard your mind while on Twitter.

The Bible instructs the believer to guard his/her mind (Prov 4:23) and this instruction still holds sway while we are on Twitter. Avoid engaging with content that is harmful to your mind and affects your spiritual growth. This leads me to the next point.

– Belong to a Christian Community

One way to ensure that you are constantly fed with the right content while on Twitter, is to belong to the right communities on the platform. ‘Christian Twitter’ is now a thing and you would be required to follow active members of the community to be assured of a ‘clean’ timeline (TL). It is important to follow those who are vocal about their faith, this creates the right atmosphere while you are on Twitter.

– Preach

Twitter is a great platform to propagate your faith. Jesus commanded us to go into all the world, this means wherever men and women can be found and there are many men and women on Twitter. Twitter has over a hundred million active users, which is a very large audience that can be capitalized on. So, make the most of your Twitter engagements, fulfill the great commission, preach the gospel.

– Watch Your Words

The Bible instructs us to make sure that our words are seasoned with salt so that they minister grace to the hearers (Colossians 4:6). Since tweets are made up of words, this scripture must guide your interactions on the platform. In all you do, be a true representative of Christ, by being polite and respectful. Also, mind what you retweet or quote, not everything is humor for the believer. Be wary of sharing content that goes against what you believe for the sake of cheap laughs or retweets. Be careful not to lend your voice to slander against other believers, clergy, or laity alike.

I hope these points guide you as you make use of the Twitter platform. I am actually contemplating getting back on Twitter, with the lifting of the ban in my home country Nigeria. I have been off that grid for a while now.
