Cultivating a teachable spirit.

James 1:21

;Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls

The words of Jesus demand unquestionable loyalty. Interestingly, a lot of people do not give His words the loyalty it deserves. Many Christians still hold on to their past lives and brag about their experiences. Others hold on to the opinions of their minds; “this is the way I learnt it”. Some of us have copied a lot of things which we have not seen in God’s word and when we are corrected, we refuse to take the truth.

James in this text is saying we should receive the word of God with meekness, laying aside all filthiness. Stop being naughty and let the word of God change you. Anyone who wants to hold on to traditions or opinions at the expense of the truth of God’s word cannot genuinely be a follower of Christ. Anyone who wants to follow the Lord must have an open mind and an open spirit.

Hebrews 1:1-4;

“God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; 3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; 4 Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.”

Hebrews 2:1-3;

”Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. 2 For if the word spoken by angels was steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward; 3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;”

As humans, we are wired to trust the familiar. However, when the words of Jesus clearly go against a long standing tradition we should not hesitate to receive them above all else. Jesus is August. We should always treat him as such.

Glory to jesus
