Davido, Give Aways, and The Church

On November 17, 2021, popular Nigerian, American, singer and songwriter David Adeleke (Davido) posted his account number on social media, requesting for money in anticipation of his twenty-ninth birthday. It sparked off reactions touching on the Davido, giveaways, and the church.

What started off as a supposed joke by the Afrobeat super star ended up raising two hundred million naira in donations, within twenty-four hours of his initial post.

Davido, popular for his giveaways, gave the monies donated to charity, including a personal contribution of fifty million naira. These sparked off several reactions on social media, including some juxtaposing the actions of the music artist to those of pastors.

Well, I would really love to know what your opinions are on Davido’s giveaway and the Church, but allow me to go first:

A Game of Value

There is actually no denial of the impact Davido has had on the Nigerian music scene. Artistes like him have created a global audience for the Afrobeat genre and that is very commendable. So, it was no surprise that he got the response he received from his fans. But as deserving as many believe Davido is of the support he received, the attack becomes fierce when a Pastor is honored in the same way.

Words like ‘Pastor Worship’ become the predominant reaction when a decision is made to honor the work of a Pastor. It all looks like hoopla, but it is genuinely a case of misunderstanding of how much work Pastors actually put in.

We acknowledge that Davido has worked hard and deserves accolades, so does your pastor or any pastor who labors hard in word and prayer. To be honest, most pastors do much more than word and prayer. Value your pastor, celebrate your pastor, give your pastor something this season.

The Church does not Exist for Giveaway

I love being Nigerian, we have a rich cultural heritage. But one thing I know, Nigerians love a lot is freebies or giveaway. Everyone currently knows a Nigerian who is looking for urgent 2k.

This is not intended to spite those who do not have, but to state things the way they are. The prevalent economic conditions are really harsh. And more people are forced to live below the poverty line daily. It is at this point that the role of the church must be clearly defined.

It is true that generosity is a laudable virtue, taught within scriptures. But the church was not set up as an organization to alleviate poverty. Click To Tweet

It is true that generosity is a laudable virtue, taught within scriptures. But the church was not set up as an organization to alleviate poverty. The church is described as the pillar and ground of truth (1 Timothy 3:15). This implies that the core reason for the existence of the church is to make all men know what Christ has done for them. This is regardless of their financial standing.

Every other thing is besides the point. It is good and worthy of emulation that Davido did give away all the money received to charity. Yet, that does not create a ground to demand the same from a church or a pastor.

Yes, with church material needs should be met. In fact, it is the responsibility of those within the church to cater for the less privileged in the church. Yet, this must never be misconstrued as the primary reason the church exists.

Also, a careful look at the Bible shows that there are certain requirements for those who would be recipients of welfare programs. The Biblical prescriptions for welfare emphasizes giving to widows who are incapable of taking care of themselves. (1 Timothy 5:3-16, Acts 6:1-3)

In addition, the Bible recommends welfare towards pastors for their dedication to the work of the ministry. (1 Timothy 5:17-18, Galatians 6:6)

The expectation is that those who are able bodied in the church should work to cater for themselves and the less privileged around them. (2 Thessalonians 3:10) So, before you feel entitled to the church’s money or your pastor’s money evaluate if you qualify as a welfare case.

Remember that the church exists to propagate the gospel of Christ. This means that the bulk of the resources that come into the church, go into the fulfillment of this cause. The church is not a give away center. Work hard to be a blessing, in this season of sharing, plan to put a smile on someone’s face.

I would really love to hear your opinions about this issue of Davido, giveaways, and the church.
