Christianity is Risky

Some people think Christianity is all about having a super daddy in the sky who carries a magic wand to grant his children’s wishes. Something like a DJ who obediently plays requests. Really? Not that God doesn’t meet the needs of His children or give good gifts, He does. The Bible says He does (James 1:17, Philippians 4:19)- but that’s not the summary of the Christian life.

Christianity is living a life of purpose – to know Christ and to make Him known.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will- Ephesians 1:3-5

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. – Ephesians 2:10

The true Christian life, as simple as this may sound can be a nerve-wracking, time-stealing, ambition-redirecting and life-snatching ordeal.

Note the use of seemingly negative words – they are to drive home the point that Christianity is not always a bed of roses nor a soft landing to escape the clutches of hell.

“For to us it has been granted on behalf of Christ not only to believe in Him but also to suffer for His sake”. – Philippians 1:29.

Ask the apostles, they will tell you the same. Many of them died for the Gospel (Acts 12:1-2). Some of them lived like pilgrims, in one place today and another tomorrow – never having the chance to establish roots long enough to live the sedentary life of having a job, house, spouse, kids or a dog (1 Corinthians 9:5). Too harsh? Okay, get you a job, house, spouse, kids and a dog alongside with souls saved from condemnation and hell.

Perhaps you are reading this piece and haven’t believed the Gospel. Maybe you ask yourself, why should I live my life for someone else other than myself? Why can’t I live my best life now? You don’t belong to yourself, you didn’t create yourself. And this world is doomed for destriction. But we have a way of escape, Jesus died and paid already, so we don’t have to pay anymore.

Jesus gave his life for our sins, in order to rescue us from this evil world in which we live. – Gal 1:4

Not every believer will eventually have a sword to their neck but at least, we must be willing to exit if the alternative is recanting our faith. Living a cushioned life is not an option in Christ (Matthew 16:24-27). Can we make it a must today to inconvenience ourselves for the sake of the world?

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done. – Matthew 16:24-27
