Guarding Your Heart Against Lust

The #Covid19 situation round the world is really alarming. The numbers keep going up every day and most cities are on lock down. Beyond the inconvenience this brings, it is important to be alert and sensitive. The bible says to not be ignorant of the devices of the enemy. As there is a pandemic in the physical, so also the enemy is roaring about seeking whose hearts and minds to devour. This is why it is important we discuss the subject of guarding your heart in these times

Proverbs 4:23 says “Keep vigilant watch over your heart…” A more common translation says to “Guard your heart with all diligence…” The greek word used there is natsar which means to watch, guard, keep.

I say all the time how God is very intentional in the bible. He wouldn’t say guard your heart if there was no need for it. Guarding your heart is not some passive activity. It is the same way you protect something dear to you. Think about a time you had something precious in your possession and you had to keep it. Think about how you protected that thing. Now magnify it many times over, that’s how we are supposed to guard our heart. Our heart requires for us to actively guard it.

Guarding your heart matters now more than ever because even though cities are lock down, the devil isn't. He is literally working overtime to distract believers. Be alert! Click To Tweet

Why does Guarding Your Heart Against Lust matter now?

Guarding your heart matters now more than ever because even though cities are lock down, the devil isn’t. He is actively deploying several ways to occupy and distract children. Remember he is a guy on a mission – one to kill, steal and destroy. The lock down has brought with it so many challenges mainly because humans weren’t made for lock down so it is so strange and difficult for us to adapt. Also, this is very likely the first time anyone of us would face a pandemic of this manner hence the weirdness of it all. These are the reasons why it seems so easy to lose guard of your heart. Still, we ought not to be ignorant of the devices of the devil. We ought to mount guard and keep our hearts more than ever in this season where it seems so easy to lose control

How do I guard my heart?

1. Be alert!

You first need to know that your heart needs to be guarded. One who doesn’t know he has something precious in his possession wouldn’t exactly be bothered about guarding it. That verse says “Guard your heart for out of it flows the issues of life…” Therefore, the state of the heart of a believer is very important and it affects pretty much every thing else going on in his life. Hence, you need to be alert.

2. Actively keep guard

Guarding your heart as we saw earlier has to be done actively. Looking at Proverbs 4:23 contextually, we see how that it is part of a bigger picture. Proverbs 4:23-27 gives some instruction concerning life. It also talks about guarding your eyes. Your eyes and ears are gateways to your heart. Hence, this isn’t the time to binge watch on movies where nudity is the theme or sensual music videos or the latest, porn on social media.

The truth of the matter is, it is never just a movie or a video. As you feast on lust, you are giving way for it to occupy your heart. It is super important to guard your eyes and ears again because of their ability to retain information in your memory. Ephesians 4:22 says to put off your old self. Also, Matthew 9:17 speaks of how if you pour new wine into old wine skins, it would spill… The mix just won’t work. This applies more to addictions. Guard the gateways to your hearts actively.

3. Fill yourself up with God’s word.

Let your heart be so filled with the word of God that garbage doesn’t have room in your heart. You see, the heart and the mind cannot be empty. It always has something in it. If you don’t consciously fill it up with the word of God, something occupies it any ways. The word of God has the ability to preserve you and keep you from falling. Stay in the Word.

4. Pray, pray, pray!

Matthew 26:41 says to watch and pray so you fall not into temptation. Prayer is one sure way to guard your heart. As you pray, you remind yourself that you are a new man in Christ Jesus and you are strengthened to withstand the wiles of the enemy. Friend, stay prayed up!

5. Fleeeee in the face of temptation.

This is a kind reminder that Joseph didn’t scabosh or shalaye in the face of temptation. When you’re faced with temptation, especially sexual temptation, brethren that is not the time to pray in tongues. Neither is it the time to do explain… the bible’s recommendation is very simple – flee!

Remember that regardless of your history, when you come to Christ Jesus, you are a new man. God is ever present to help us against addictions, lust or whatever sin. There is help for you in the Holy Spirit. Guarding your heart and choosing the right per time is how you respond to the lavish grace of God we have through Jesus Christ. I hope this blessed you. Shalom 🙂

I hope this blesses you.
