How Do I Know I’m Saved?

How Do I Know I’m Saved? How do you know that you have truly been translated from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light? How can be sure for a certain that you are now a child of God with all your sins forgiven? Is there any sign? Any outward proof? Any physical indication or changes? This was a question I got from a friend and one I am sure is on the lips (or in the heart) of many other persons.

How Do I Know I’m Saved?

  1. Because you Believe

The very first way to answer the question “How Do I Know I’m Saved” is to ask the question, “what is the requirement for salvation?, What do I need to so to be saved? And the very simple answer as seen in the bible is simple; Believe.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. – John 3:16

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me will live, even though he dies.John 11:25

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. – Rom 10:9

They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved–you and your household.” – Acts 16:31

It says, whoever believes in Jesus has eternal life, he who believes in Jesus will live, believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved. I believe that is pretty simple and clear.

So, the question will be, do you believe? If your answer is YES, then, you are saved.

2. Because the Holy Spirit is in you.

From the scriptures, another major way to know that you are saved is by the Holy Spirit we receive when we believe (at new birth).

and he has identified us as his own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts as the first instalment that guarantees everything he has promised us. –  2 Corinthians 1:22

And now you that have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago. The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify him. – Eph 1:13-14

I know you might say that this is even vaguer than the first point. How do I know I have the Holy Spirit after I believed? It falls back on the integrity of the word of God.

Probably the early church also doubted their salvation, but we see Paul in these last two bible verses give them a reason to be assured of the salvation they have received; in the truth they have believed because when they did, they received the Spirit of God, who stands as a guarantee of the promised eternal life.

Let me try and explain.

So, you ask, how am I sure that I’m saved, how do I know that I have eternal life since I believed in Jesus as the way of salvation? Paul answers by saying, after you believed, God put His spirit in your heart to guarantee you that He will deliver on His promise.

It’s more like an earnest payment; a downpayment for a thing for which even if you fail to deliver the promised thing, you love the earnest/down payment. Which implies that the God will lose the Holy Spirit forever if HE fails to deliver on His promise of Eternal Life, that is how assured His promise is.

Does anything change physically when you are saved? No.

Does anything change at all? Yes, your heart changes.

“Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. – Ezekiel 36:26

Salvation is a change of nature, change of being; the old man dies and the new man comes alive. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. – 2 Cor 5:17. The fulfilment of the prophecy of Ezekiel that God will remove our heart of stone and give us a heart of flesh.

Salvation also ushers in a change of desires, this though doesn’t happen automatically, but you can now set/control your desires and affections to the things above, by the renewal of your mind by the word of God.

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God – Col 3:1-3

Now you can set your mind to heavenly things because you are dead and because you are saved, you are a new creation with a heart of flesh, and renewed after.

Do not lie to one another, since you have taken off the old self with its practices, and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of itsCreator. – Col 3:9-10

The reason you can be told to not lie is that you have taken off the old self with its practices and you have taken one that is in the image of God.

Does anything change physically when you are saved? No. Does anything change at all? Yes, your heart changes. Click To Tweet
