Lecrae’s Confession: Good, Bad, Ugly

This is not just a song, it is more than a few words melodiously stringed together to make up a track, this is a story, a true story, or to use the perfect word, it’s a confession. Do you know that song that every artist sings where they open up on their dark past and struggles like Kirk Franklin came out about his struggles growing up and addiction to pornography (Click HERE to read). The ‘Good, Bad, Ugly’ track is it for Lecrae, a song he calls his most personal song to date. Everyone’s got a past. Lecrae’s got his own too, and what are the things he spoke about in this track?

  1. The abortion of a child he had with his college girlfriend.
  2. Being molested by his female babysitter when he was barely in the 1st grade.
Here is what Lecrae had to say about Good, Bad and Ugly;

This is my most personal song to date. If I didn’t confront the issues on this song head on I would live a guilty, condemned, and shameful life. All of that is contrary to what I believe about myself. We all have skeletons in our closets. We all have things in our past we will either bury or confront. No one expected me to experience, deal with, or tell the world about these experiences, but I’m healed. So, I wrote this song for the healing of others. —Lecrae (Source: Genius.com)

What’s to learn from this song or Lecrae’s intention for this song.

  1. Confront your past – This was the message in a previous I titled HOW TO DEAL WITH UGLY MEMORIES. From not acknowledging the struggle and challenges to keeping it secret, trying to fight it alone, to getting used to it. These are all schemes the devil use in keeping us tied down in our mess. But getting dissatisfied with “barely getting by” to seeking for the freedom from sin and the life of peace and joy Christ made possible His blood by turning to God and reading God’s word for a renewal of our sinful soul, to opening up to someone who will stand by you, pray with you, keep tabs on you, but overall will not let go until they see you free.
  2. You are not the only one – We are often paralyzed by the weight of our struggles and sin because we think it’s a situation or struggle that is unique to just us, but no, someone has gone through what you are going through, someone is going through it right now, and you won’t be the last either. The fact that some have gone through it, is enough reason to let you know that you can and you will victoriously go through it likewise.
  3. Sharing/Talking about your past can help someone heal – I have personally experienced this on the blog via one of our series titled DAMAGED, on damaged, people who have gone through shameful and painful past like addictions and molestation tell their stories, what happened and how they were able to go through it or going through it. And so many testimonies have been received from readers going through same situations after reading the Damaged series. (Click HERE to read the DAMAGED Series). To share your story, use any of the contacts after the post or send a mail to hello@lifegiva.com.

In the Lyrics below, Lecrae spoke of how even after getting saved, his body still enjoyed the sin, and unprotected sex made his college girlfriend pregnant, and his decision to abort the baby. In Verse 2, he spoke of how he was molested by his female babysitter when he was almost 8 years old. He capped it up by the truth that got him free. Here is the lyrics;

[Hook]
Come on everybody sit down
People wanna act like they are in the know
Well I’m here to wipe off your smile
And tell you what’s the word around town
I know you don’t wanna hear the truth
I know you hate the fact that I actually have the proof
But I just need you to believe
I’m talking the good, the bad, the ugly

[Verse 1]
Remember back in ’02
When I was in school and actin’ a fool
My soul got saved
My debt had been paid
But still I kept running off with my crew
Sex on my brain and death in my veins
Had a main thang we stayed up til 2
Smokin’
Waking and bakin’ we naked
My body was lovin’ it
Soul was hatin’ it
Time and time after time
Our bodies grew close the girl was so fine
Heard a heart beat that wasn’t hers or mine
The miracle of life had started inside
My God
Ignored the warning signs
Supressed that truth I felt inside
I was just havin’ fun with this
I’m too young for this
I’m thinkin’ me myself and I
Should I sacrifice this life
To keep my vanity and live nice
And she love and trust me so much
That whatever I say she’ll probably oblige
But I was too selfish with my time
Scared my dreams were not gone survive
So I dropped her off at that clinic
That day a part of us died

[Hook]

[Verse 2]
I remember back in the day
I was barely in the first grade
Got teeth missin’
Watchin’ Tom & Jerry
Tryna go outside so I can play
I was told to watch out for strangers
Keep my eyes peeled for danger
Folks workin’ late I had a baby sitter
I ain’t ’bout to sit here and name her
I was almost 8 when she came in late
Woke me up with a game to play
Did a few things that’s hard to say
And told me to keep that secret safe
Now how a young boy supposed to deal
I’m tryna act like it ain’t real
Had my innocence just stripped from me
And I still don’t know how to feel
And I wonder how to address it
Can’t tell my family too messy
So I just embrace it it’s hard to face it
I’m too ashamed to confess it
So I kept it in and ain’t speak
Didn’t think it hit me so deep
So into it I got promiscuous
And only God could help me get free
But I been forgiven
My Savior risen
I’m out the prison
I know that
I got the power to say to no to all of my struggles
God will control that
Every time we slip and we fall
Gotta get back up and fight on
We are not defined by our past
The future look bright
I see the light on
