MADE IN HIS IMAGE

Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” – Genesis 1:26

Genesis 1:26 talks about how God was to make man – in His image and likeness; and for what purpose – dominion on the earth. First, many have misinterpreted this verse of scripture and in doing so, proclaimed themselves to be gods with a small “G”.

Simply put, when God said He would make man in His image and likeness, He meant He would create man, not as a spirit, or as a fellow God, but as His image-bearer, creatures with living souls unlike any other animal that He had made. And in doing so, God created one He can relate and fellowship with, one He could love. Man became the pinnacle of all of His creations and was given the authority to govern the earth. This authority does not necessarily connote physical authority over all creation. Had it been so, we would have lions and bears as pets!

The fact that man governs the earth also does not mean God’s hands are tied when it comes to the affairs of the world. It does not also mean that God has to seek for man’s permission to bring His will to pass. That is so untrue! God is sovereign! He still has complete control over what happens in the earth and we see His hand everyday! This would beg the question: So if God is still in control, why is there so much evil and suffering in the world? Well, the answer is simple – cause and effect!

As God’s representatives on the earth, he has given is a gift of choice and free will. But the heart of man cannot do good. All the evil we see in the today is a result of man’s sin and the wickedness in his heart. If you read the next few chapters of Genesis, you’ll see how it grew! This started from Adam after the fall. And I tell you, it would have been really worse had God not been holding strings together!

Anyways, back to the point. Just in case you have not, start carrying yourself with prestige, not as a god with creative power, but as a representative of the all-wise God on the earth, one who has the freedom to relate and fellowship with Him just like Adam and Eve did before the fall, through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ!

Grace and Peace,

Bright.
