More Important than The Fear of Being Forgotten

Oblivion simply means a state of being, completely forgotten or a state of complete forgetfulness or unawareness.

Especially with this season the whole world is in, we’re forcefully aware that life as we know it here and now can not last forever, in a bid to beat this fleeting world we do everything to not be forgotten.

No matter what we find ourselves doing- be an accountant, doctor, engineer, writer, musician, actor etc  deep down, there are parts of us that just wish we could do more to be remembered on Earth.

It’s not uncommon for us to ask ourselves;

  • Will I still be relevant to my friends and family in ten years?
  • How long will it take before I am completely forgotten?
  • How many non-friends and family members have something to say about how I have touched them in a different way?
  • Will my inventions and creations last for a lifetime?

To give ourselves satisfactory answers to the following questions we strive to work twice as hard as the next person to ensure we bring something unique or different to the table. To be quite fair, it is okay to want to mean more and  be more after all we were made for more.

The internet and well stored archives has made the works of people outlive them. Musicians for example, have songs that outlive them, books written by great authors still touch lives even after the authors have left the earth; great men and women of history have emblem till date even after they are long gone.

Since the Bible is our standard, let’s look at what it says in Mark 8:36-37 ‘For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul? Or what shall he give in exchange for his soul?’

Inferably, we can say that;  the fear of being forgotten though valid should not be considered most important as there is something more important

So, while it is ambitious and admirable to want to touch as many lives as we can, in whatever capacity (hopefully positive), I can tell you that there is something far more important than the fear of oblivion.

Just for emphasis sake I would put it this way; no matter how many lives you improve, how many children you send to school, how many people you put out of the street, if you do not know Christ, oblivion is the least of your problems.

Do not get me wrong- being a source of light to those around you is great and admirable and everyone should strive for it.

However, knowing Christ and making Him Known is the ultimate. You won’t just be remembered by those who you left behind on Earth or by the things you left behind, but you’ll also be remembered for the whole of eternity- because you’ve got eternal life. How awesome is that?!

You can be assured of Eternal Life while still living this transient life.

Christ is a greater treasure you can have here that transcends after here.

Read how the book of John puts it

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.’ John 3:16

Yes! There have been arguments about how doing good translates or buys you a ticket into heaven. Well,  here is what the bible has to say about it:

Ephesians 2:8: For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.

Only faith in Jesus saves- not good works or accolades gathered on Earth. Good works do not matter as much to you once your time ends here on Earth. Don’t get into the struggle for recognition on Earth and forget what truly matters at the end of the day.

True! the desire to be forever in the hearts of those whose paths you crossed is admirable but is that all we should strive for? NO! Knowing Christ and making Him known is way more important

The moment you come to the knowledge of who Christ is, good works will become inherent to you. Why? -Christ is Good and He’s living in you! This is what Romans says  “But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the spirit is life because of righteousness.”Romans 8:10

Mark 16:15  He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” This  is the best love gift you can receive and share with everyone. The gift of Christ’s love and goodness.

Hope this helps you in your quest for what is more important and your fear of oblivion.
