Spiritual Growth/Devotion Guide for the Busy Believer

The reality of the average believer in the 21st century is the fight for balance between everyday life demands like a job, schooling, parenting…and maintaining an active and vibrant Christian walk. How does a busy believer maintain a fervent Spiritual growth or devotion? I had a friend recently shared this struggle end with me.

My Friend: I listened to a podcast today and a guy named “Nath buzz” a popular Hollywood actor was speaking about his faith in God and ohhh it was deep. His convictions about his belief in God is nothing like I’ve heard before. I was so moved. And then he mentioned that he studies his Bible every day for 6 hours and how he finished the Bible in one month etc.

His devotion to the word was exceptional and was easily reflected in the way he spoke about God. Oh, his love was deep lol. I immediately desired to walk in that depth of knowledge and understanding. I read my Bible for say 1 hour a day and I feel so deprived.

So here’s my question. What is the place of intense consecration? How can I achieve that level of dedication in a busy workaholic life like mine? Because I want to walk in that level of fellowship with God. I know you’re a busy person too and may have passed these struggles. Lol

My response;
So like you said, it’s a busy life, and business varies from person to person. Someone like Bill Gate (if a believer) can afford 6 hours daily to read his bible. cos other people do most of his work for him, all he does really is read/study. Also, a person whose line of profession/career is in faith/religion/theology will also have the luxury of time, but it might not be possible for an average person because of our work, family, education and whatnot.

Here is a simple Spiritual Growth/Devotion Guide for the Busy Believer

1. Make consecration/devotion a lifestyle and not an activity.

This is my biggest secret. If you spend 24hrs with me, you’ll be shocked at how much I always have to do, so what I do is to surround myself with God’s word and devotion while doing every other thing.

I am either listening to podcasts, I do a lot of this. I am always listening to something edifying. Or stirring worship songs.

2. I put myself in situation that keeps me in the word, e.g. Association.

This might not work for everyone, but here is an example, I position myself to answer peoples questions. I don’t necessarily have all these answers, so I study to answer, that way I am constantly learning. Cos I am comparing commentary, listening to like 3 preachers to see what they said…

This works for being in a close-knit fellowship also, friends that keep themselves on their toes. Association is a powerful tool to maintain fervent devotion. The fevour of people around you, whether hot or cold will rub off on you.

I have groups like that where Brite, or Jo Deep is sharing a link to an heretic message and we all react, vent, study, respond…

3. Have systems/routines.

15 mins devotion everyday is more powerful than 1 hour weekly.

Have a structure. It can be 1 hour daily, stick to it, make it worth every second. You are growing. It’s oftentimes not the length of time, but the quality of time with consistency.

Also, have a pattern. Imagine you are studying the bible, book by book, you’ll make more progress than someone reading randomly.

3. Have scheduled extended time of devotion.

Imagine, say every Sunday, from church, you’ll be locking yourself somewhere to spend 5 hours in devotion. This is in addition to the one hour daily/30mins daily. Or you decide to take 3 days to fast and have long time of devotion every month.

You need to plan and schedule times where you can put every other thing aside to have extended time of devotion.

4. Take a FULL break.

Take a year or couple of months to go take a course in theology or just travel somewhere, separate yourself from everything to study, and grow and learn. I know this might not be for everybody, but we all should plan to do this at least once in a couple of years.

5. Be an ACTIVE doer.

Spiritual growth oftentimes comes by practice and not just learning. Someone who goes on the street to preach the gospel will know more about evangelims and grow more in that aspect than someone who is reading books or just the bible about it.

Someone who prays for the sick will grow faster in that aspect than someone who merely reads about it.

And being a doer doesn’t need special times of devotion, it should be your everyday walk, your natural everyday life.

You can also ask how do I balance splitting my time between everyday life/work demands and God?

Don’t let one suffer for the other. Spiritual devotion does not mean abandoning or trailing on other aspects of life.

Make Bible study and consuming faith content be a daily affair. I don’t think it should be a case of “either-or”. You can have both.

You can do a ratio 2:1 (this might not be realistic), but a case of one faith-related content to two business and the like.
It doesn’t have to be one to one, or two to one but put a structure that helps you balance them.

I hope this Spiritual Growth/Devotion Guide for the ‘Busy Believer’ has given you insight on how to be both outstanding your career and your devotion because God expects excellence from every aspect of our life.
