Things to Remember before you Pray

There is a right and a wrong way to pray. Prayer also can sometimes feel like a chore when we do not understand or fully comprehend the important fundamentals of prayer. Fundamentals like, who we are about to speak to and what we mean to him. Which is the reason I find it important to write on the things to remember before you pray.

5 Things to Remember before you Pray

1. God Loves You.

Remember that God initiated this relationship, and so you’re praying because God made it possible to have a relationship with Him. God took the first step and its important to remember that the one you want to talk to, wants to talk to you. And this changes everything. It eliminates the idea that you have to clean up your mess or present yourself in a particular way before you can approach Him.

Knowing that the one you’re going to meet with loves and cares for you makes a lot of difference. First, it helps you believe that you’re going to talk to someone that cares and it makes you believe that you’re speaking to someone that’ll listen to you.

2. Prayer is first about who you are. Or, You can pray because of who you are.

You can pray in Christ’s name because you are in Christ and you have that privilege. Think of it like this, you can walk up to your parent and initiate a conversation or make a request anytime before needing to do any ritual or go through any protocol. But if I have to talk to them or ask something from them, I will need to set up a meeting, request for an audience and the other protocols.

You are God’s child, heir of God and joint-heirs with Christ. The bible says that you are a member of God’s house, no more a stranger. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, – Eph 2:19.

This becomes our access in prayer. We don’t need a priest to mediate or intercede for us anymore, we can now go to God ourselves.

3. God is not far from you.

Whether or not you “feel” like God is hearing you, just know that He is. He’s there. Be conscious of the fact the Spirit of God is inside you and so God hears you every time you speak to Him and you don’t have to feel something special or in a certain type of way to know that your prayers are heard.

This would also help you realize you can pray anywhere. You can stay in constant fellowship with God. There would be times you set aside to pray in “special” places, but you can also talk to God whenever and wherever you are. He’s not someone you’re going to meet somewhere, He lives in you.

4. You don’t have to feel like praying to pray.

There are times you totally won’t feel like praying, but you need to pray regardless. Remind yourself how important prayer is in your spiritual walk and how effective the prayer of the righteous is.

In times like this, help yourself by praying with people or joining platforms that would stir you up to pray, this is one of the reasons you need godly friends and a good church family. You can also play songs that would stir you up, and if it’s a feeling that has lingered for long, talk to a mature believer about it.

5. Remember that prayer is powerful and yields results.

Every opportunity to pray is an opportunity to cause things to change, to stir up yourself, to align yourself with the will of God.

You’re always better when you pray, always. Prayer leaves you better whether you feel like it or not. It is important to always remember why.

Read stories like how the apostles prayed and caused angelic intervention for Paul and Silas in prison, read about how they prayed and received instructions and direction, read about how Jesus prayed for Peter because the devil wanted to sift Him. Stories like that of Esther will remind you that when it looks like there’s no way, you can always pray, and so there’s always a way for you!

I hope this reminds you of how effective and powerful prayer is.
