To Love Is To Be Vulnerable

Everytime you go anti culture and put people before you, you show Christ.”

These were my thoughts on Wednesday evening during mid-week service. I thought it’d be easy. That my flesh wouldn’t cry out in angry response. Your guess is right. I was wrong.

Having the same mind that was in Christ meant to be vulnerable, Humble, Open to being hurt. I mean, wasn’t Christ crucified?

Taking up this thinking would mean knowing my worth in Christ but choosing to serve others- whether I was perceived as better than they, or otherwise.

This scared me. I was legit afraid that people were going to trample on me. I mean, give them folks one mile and they’ll walk five, right?

So, I thought about protecting my heart.

Drew up a plan B.

Keep that heart from hurt. Guard it against future heartbreak.

I will love. But not so much. Be vulnerable, only not too open. Not be conceited yeah, but put people in their place.

But Paul told Timothy on the 5th page of his second letter. The 17th verse to be exact. Every scripture is given for reproof. For instruction in righteousness. That the man of God may be furnished for every good work. So when I thought about this, I realized I couldn’t go ahead with Plan B. There was no going halfway.

To love is to vulnerable. To  esteem people to be better than me means I’ll be giving folks the opportunity to take advantage of me. In doing this, I will not only be following Jesus’ perfect example- only because he said so, but because I understand with the responsibility to love folks and consider them more important than myself, comes the ability to obey that instruction.

Indeed. Grace and truth has come!
