What If You Have Same-Sex Attraction?

Am I gay?

Am I straight?

Am I bisexual?

Am I in the wrong body?

These are questions that plague the mind of many people now in this time when gender is no more binary- male or female, where it is no more strange to see persons of the same sex making love on the TV screen and in the public. Where it is legal to marry a person of the same sex (in some part of the world).

These questions are not just present in the minds of non-Christians or atheists but also on the minds of Christians…and no I am not talking about churchgoers, I am saying blood washed, tongue talking brothers/sisters.

To answer these questions we will walk through a (response by Jackie Hill Perry in one of her IGTV videos) study of sexuality by Jackie Hill Perry.

So you may ask, who is Jackie Hill Perry? Jackie is an American poet, writer, and hip hop artist from St. Louis. She is most popularly known for being an ex-homosexual, a change she attributes to her faith in the God of the Bible. Now she uses her redemptive story to teach about God and His idea about sexuality among other things.

What do you do when you start having sexual feelings for someone of the same sex, even though you’ve identified as heterosexual all your life?

The world will tell you that you might be gay or bisexual, words that are not in the bible because there were no such words when the bible was written, but the concept existed. People had sexual feelings and relations with the same sex as early as the time of the book of Genesis. And the bible called these feelings something- unnatural, desires of the flesh.

‘Unnatural’ because the human anatomy or better put sexual reproduction makes it clear sex should be between members of the opposite sex.

Jackie Hill Perry says that what you are feeling is what the Bible describes as ‘passion of the flesh’ (desires). The flesh has feelings this is why Paul will tell the Romans;

…Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men,... – Romans 1:26-27 (NIV)

The confusion comes when the world tells us that our identity as a person spurs from how we feel. The fact that you desire or have desires that are not naturally only points to the fact that you possess flesh, a flesh in its fallen state as a result of the fall of the first man. When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned. – Rom 5:12

According to Jackie, Sexual Orientations are still very new when compared to when Paul wrote to the Romans or when Jesus walked the earth. There were no words to capture the categories of sexuality like we have them now.

So when we talk about passions/desires of the flesh the main identity that is showcased is your identity as a sinner but it does not say anything about your personhood. If you let your desires define you, you soon begin to assume you have no choice than to obey these unnatural desires.

The deceit in our world is ‘because you feel a certain way you have to be that certain way’.

If you have believed, accepted Jesus as saviour and He has filled you with the Holy Spirit- You are now a child of God.

So, what if you have same-sex attraction? What if you are tempted to steal something that isn’t yours? What if you are tempted to lie? What Jackie is saying and what the bible says is that same-sex attraction, even though has a name now (homosexuality, lesbianism…) is nothing different from any other desires of the flesh to sin. Sins that Christ died to liberate us from already. Sins we can put away by the working of God’s spirit in us.

Therefore you have power over your passions (Sinful Desires), You possess the ability by the power of the Holy Spirit to obey God and live by the fruit Of the Holy Spirit.

You can now put to death the desires that came with your old nature. You can enforce the behaviours that are with the new person that you are.

For we know that our old self was crucified with Him in order that sin’s dominion over the body may be abolished, so that we may no longer be enslaved to sin, – Romans 6:6

Put to death, therefore, the components of your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience – Col 3:5-6

So guys, don’t let the devil (through your mind of course) or anybody trap you in guilt. That you are having sexual thoughts towards the same gender as yourself does not make you Homosexual. You are much more than your temptations plus Jesus died to save us not just from sexual sins but from ALL SINS.

By all means, if you need to get any kind of help or talk to someone who is spiritually mature please do but do not think that you are your sinful desires.

You can now by the power of God put to death the desires that came with your old nature. You can enforce the behaviours that are with the new person that you are. Click To Tweet
