Can real people kindly gather around the table? Please, hypocrites, keep off. Who says sin is not enjoyable?
Who falls for the popular religious exclaims to scare their audience from the impending doom of sin. They say, “Sin is bad”, “Sin is ugly”, “Sin is bitter”, “Sin is sour”, “Sin is disgusting”. But the average “sinner” knows that the preacher has no slightest idea of what he/she is saying. Which probably further affirms their conviction not to give up sin. If the preachers are so ignorant not to know how pleasurable the acts are. Then what gives them the license to be an authority over the rightness or wrongness of it. Or poking their judge-full nose over the business they have the least idea about.
It’s like telling a kid to give up a toy he has found solace or fun in for a while. Who says sex isn’t beautiful, heavenly, magical. I heard of a church sister who got raped. She enjoys it and thus develops a craving to recreate the similar pleasure which she experienced during the terrible ordeal. Overlooking the trauma (this is a rare case though). If getting high or drunk was so ugly or bitter, then you need to ask yourself how come people get addicted to it? The same goes for pornography, masturbation, forgery…
Not to deceive ourselves, sin is pleasurable. It is enticing, tempting (very desirable and hard to resist). Addictive even. Which youth wouldn’t choose being ground over at a club by half drunk almost naked and sexy girls over being at a vigil with screaming possessed girls. Or watching a Mount Zion movie alone in the hostel while all the dorm mates have all gone for a party over a porn video? And if fornication, virginity and not getting pregnant are the big clauses, then there are a hundred and one substitutes or remedies.
First, I must state here that IT TAKES MORE THAN BEING DISCIPLINED OR BEING RELIGIOUS NOT TO FALL INTO TEMPTATION. I have seen countless individuals who have attached their streak of sinless expedition to their ability to pray and fast, to say no or to flee, to their well-built spiritual muscle for resistance to the pollutants in the world, more like the body’s immune system, but how foolish they are and I see their doom gathering like the cloud, ready to fall.
If you claim to know your bible so much, haven’t you read about Abimelech’s boast before God?
“But God came to Abimelech in a dream that night and told him, “You’re as good as dead—that woman you took, she’s a married woman.” Now Abimelech had not yet slept with her, hadn’t so much as touched her. He said, “Master, would you kill an innocent man? Didn’t he tell me, ‘She’s my sister’? And didn’t she herself say, ‘He’s my brother’? I had no idea I was doing anything wrong when I did this.” God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know your intentions were pure, that’s why I kept you from sinning against me; I was the one who kept you from going to bed with her. Genesis 20:3-6 (MSG)
God told him plainly that He was the one that kept Him from sinning. It takes the power of God by His grace to keep you from sinning. Not your “5 steps not to fall into temptation“. I am not saying all those measures are not required, but they all must lie at the mercy of God’s grace, Him helping you.
[Not in your own strength] for it is God Who is all the while effectually at work in you [energizing and creating in you the power and desire], both to will and to work for His good pleasure and satisfaction and delight. (AMP) Or easier rendered as in the living bible as, “For God is at work within you, helping you want to obey him, and then helping you do what he wants.” Philippians 2:13
Secondly, Sin is sweet but offers no good. If it ends here, I would have justified everybody caught in the web of an act or addiction or the other. But apart from the fact that it doesn’t offer any good, it is harmful, (destructive and toxic). If the bible is true and holds any authority over our lives at all. Then we avoid sin as much as possible. Not because it adds nothing to us being pleasurable, but it takes a whole lot from us.
For the wages of sin is death (Rom 6:23). If you live by your corrupt nature, you are going to die (Rom 8:13). The one who sows to please his sinful nature. From that nature will reap destruction (Gal 6:8).
It doesn’t get clearer than that.
James gave its timeline; But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.
Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin, when it is fully grown, brings forth death. (James 1:14-15)
Lastly, about getting over addiction or sin. This is supposed to be a separate post, but I will be as concise as possible here.
• Refer to my first point: You can’t do it by yourself nor your own strength. Trying this has led to desperate frustration for so many. They do all they have been told to do, read books, buy all possible materials by a particular preacher or speaker, hoping there lies the way out, but when nothing seems to change in the immediate time possible, they break down, get worse than they were prior to when they started trying to get over whatever it is. Thus my second point.
• Getting over an addiction, habit or sin takes time: habit and addiction are not gotten overnight, so why do we think that doing some set of activities will automatically get rid of them? I once expected a spiritual brother of mine to just lay hands on me and probably cast out the “demon of masturbation” for me to get over it, but he asked me to go and start reading my bible and build acquaintance with God. I didn’t know how long it took but doing what he said took my focus from trying to overcome my habit to loving and knowing God and I got free and have been free ever since, this was far back in my JSS 3.
My advice is, embrace the process as much as you pant for the result, the result will come eventually if you don’t faint and give up the fight (Unlike the recent post where an homosexual used the excuse that God made him a gay, what I see more as an excuse to stop trying). While embracing the process, love yourself, even after every time you fall. God’s provision for forgiveness covers every single time you fault, He will pull you up every single time you fall, your sin doesn’t stop Him from loving you and welcoming you into His presence, remember He said you should come boldly to the throne of grace, that you will receive mercy (compassion and forgiveness) and the grace to help you get through.
• This point is supposed to have come earlier, but anyways; get information and help from the right source.
I have had a friend wanting to know if masturbation was wrong or not go on the internet, and he saw convincing facts, enough for him to start without even knowing what he was delving into. Get information from the right source.
• Lastly, include a friend, someone that would not judge you in the struggle to overcome. Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. (James 5:16). This effective prayer, if taken in context is not talking about getting whatever you want from God, neither is it talking about healing from diseases, but emotional and spiritual healing, healing from the hold of sin. Don’t keep it to yourself.
SIN IS SWEET BUT DEADLY, be wise.
