Your Spot-On Guide To Making Life Decisions

“Where do I go from here?
So many voices ringing in my ear
Which is the voice that was I was meant to hear?
How will I know?
Where do I go from here?

As an avid fan of cartoons, the above song was one of my best songs. It’s one of songs from the cartoon – “Pocahontas II”. Pocahontas sang it to express her concerns about sailing to a foreign land for the sake of saving her people from a potential war between them and the English settlers. She finally seeks advice from the Grandmother Willow, her spirit guide. Grandmother Willow advice Pocahontas to listen to “the spirit within.” What spirit? She is not told. Not a surprising advice, after all, Grandmother Willow is only a tree.

As Christians, we face lots of pressure, temptations and choices. Like Pocahontas, we will find ourselves in situations where our choices can have either a positive or negative effect on our lives. Some of those choices include the choice of a local church, career choice, romantic relationship decisions and friendship choices. Apart from this, we have to decide which political, socio-cultural or economic views to hold. At what point do we draw the line? What do we rely on for the right advice?

Follow your heart? That’s a sure way that leads to disaster. Our heart does not always have to the right answer to the myriad of questions plaguing us. It is influenced by a lot of voices; what we see in our daily life, the movies we watch, the conversations around us, the media, entertainment, pop culture, the news, events, to mention a few . Depending on how much we open ourselves up to these things, the decisions we take may not always turn out to be the best (Proverbs 4:23).

We live in a world where views and perceptions have become relative and liberal. The answers to almost every question depend on contexts, views, theories, backgrounds and feelings, to mention a few. Interestingly, these things change according to the movement of the tide. For example, feminism started out as a movement aimed at securing equality amongst genders/sexes but now, it has morphed into several categorizations conveniently suiting the views of its proponent.

As with every secular conversation, someone somewhere will come up with a new theory and views will become divided. It seems rather foolish to live our lives based on this “every wind of doctrine.” (Ephesians 4:14). As helpful as science, motivational talks and psychological materials can be, their accuracy cannot be compared to that of the Holy Spirit.

You want a spot-on guide to life’s decisions devoid of the average man’s fickle perception? Then the Spirit is the true north you seek (1 Corinthians 2:9-12). He will guide you aright unfailingly. It’s His job. You will find yourself consistently making the right decisions in conformity with God’s will for your life. He will point you to the word; God’s absolute for our lives.

Once you find yourself getting confused about anything at all, pray in the Holy Ghost, get filled and you will receive the answers you seek. (Ephesians 5:18-19). You can never go wrong with the Holy Spirit.  The wonderful thing is that He lives is in us. We don’t have to go seek Him by a river bend or some obscure place. He is in us forever. He will never leave us so we are sure that we have a very present help in time of need (John 14:16, Ephesians 1:13). Glory to God!

Now, we have answers to our dear Pocahontas’ questions: we will listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit. We know we should because the word says so. We will go wherever He leads. We will do whatever He says.
