Five Ways to Fight Sexual Sin

Sexual sin is one thing so many people struggle with. Whether old or young, married or unmarried, Christian or non-Christian,  Inasmuch as nobody really ever willingly dabbles into it, we all still fall into it one way or the other. So, what ways do we fight sexual sin?

I totally understand that God gave us sexual organs for a reason. He never makes mistakes, and everything He created is well thought out and perfectly planned.

You might ask, “Why should I be given something freely, and not be expected to use it?”  Asides from the many bible verses that would answer this question, one answer I would give is ‘Delayed gratification’.

Before you start saying “Ehen!. This girl has come again”, and attention spans start waning, I’d like to list five ways to fight sexual sin. They helped me, and they can help you too.

  1. FLEE SEXUAL SIN

Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body”. – 1 Corinthians 6:18 (NLT)

No matter what form the sin might come in, please remove your shoes, sandals, or slippers, put them under your armpit, and run very far away.  Prevention is better than cure.

  1. ASK THE HOLY SPIRIT FOR HELP

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything that I have told you”. – John 14:26 (ISV)

The Holy Spirit was sent to help us with ALL things, absolutely all things. So, you can ask him for help with virtually anything. The best part is that it’s just the both of you talking, so no one else has to know. So asking the Holy Spirit to help is one way to fight sexual sin.

  1. GET AN ACCOUNTABILITY BUDDY

Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working”. – James 5:16 (ESV)

Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. 10 If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble...Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken”. – Ecclesiastes 4:9-10,12 (NLT)

Never underestimate the power of how talking to people could help with your problems. An accountability buddy is a really close friend; they could be a parent, a sibling, or even your pastor. Make sure they are someone whom you can confide in and they’ll give you sound advice.

It’s also advisable that they’re Christians who are schooled in the word of God. This will enable them to help you even better.

  1. SET CLEAR BOUNDARIES

You set a boundary they cannot cross; they will never cover the earth again”. – Psalm 104:9 (HCSB)

Clearly state what you and your partner should avoid while together. If you know that a particular place or thing will set off reactions that could lead to sexual sin, it is advisable you let your partner know so that both of you avoid such situations. If your partner starts to exploit these triggers for their sexual benefit, then you should not be in that relationship.

Make sure your boundaries are not weak, they should be clearly stated, and should also give no room for assumptions. It the boundaries are set low, you stand a greater chance or crossing them.

  1. DELAYED GRATIFICATION

“Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.  For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever”. – 1 John 2:15-17

You know how it feels when that bowl of ice cream you didn’t eat when you had one of your sugar cravings becomes a life saver when you’re back from work after trekking under the hot Lagos sun?. That is exactly how it is with sex. When you patiently wait till the right time, sex feels so much better. Rather than deriving temporary pleasure from 50 naira packets of Fanvanille, why not just wait till the cold bowl of mint and strawberry ice cream, with chocolate toppings comes along?

If you have this at the back of your mind, it becomes easier to hold on till the God-chosen time for you to meet your partner arrives.

Finally, I would like to add that it is never, ever too late for you to free yourself from the grip of sexual sin. You might think you’ve fallen in too deep, but I am here to tell you that there is still a way out.
