God’s Leading – Lessons Learnt from the Bible and Experience

To be led by God is to be instructed, guided and directed by Him. The best part is that we have the privilege as His children to be led by Him. In other words, we can be confident that He is willing to lead us. We can be sure of God’s leading.

There was a time in my life I was anxious and desperate to receive God’s guidance. “Does God lead ?” “How does He lead?” and “Will He lead me?”  were some of the questions I had. I believe I’m not the only one that has had them. The truth is God leads, the word of God (most importantly) says so and I have experienced it.

Without further ado, here are my personal experiences and lessons learnt concerning God’s leading

1. God leads

This is the first, and most important thing I learnt. God speaks to people. I’ve seen it in the word and heard the experiences of others, but the question in my heart was if He would lead ME?

From the Scriptures, we see a God that is present, that leads, and speaks. He initiated this relationship because He actually wants a relationship with me! So why should I worry that He would leave me by myself? Believing this got my anxiety out of the way.

God cares about me, and in every area of my life. He wants me to take the right steps, and make the right choices. If He puts His Spirit in me, I can be confident that He is with me always. Like me, trust that God cares enough to lead and direct you.

2. Obeying the word is being led by God

The word of God contains His written instructions. It also reveals His heart and will to us. Therefore, I’m being led by God when I allow the word of God to influence me. It does not make sense to consistently ignore the clear written instructions from the word of God, and yet be seeking some other instructions from the same person.

Also, we discern the character of God in His word. God won’t give instructions that are inconsistent with what He has revealed to us through His written word, so it’s important that you give attention to Bible study.

In addition to that, some instructions in the word of God would give you all the answers that you need on many occasions. Don’t ignore the Bible!

3. It does not have to come in a particular way

I learnt that sometimes, we miss God’s leading because we expected it to come in a certain way. There was a time God led me to write a particular ebook by constantly nudging me to. He just put the desire in my heart and constantly reminded me about it, but I ignored for a while. I felt like if God wanted to talk to me, it had to feel more serious or convincing.

I didn’t realise God was clearly leading me until weeks after, when my pastor taught one day about how people miss leading because of what they expect, and  my situation was the exact example used! Immediately He mentioned it, I remembered and realised God was leading me to write my book all the while.

God leads. Be patient, have a submissive heart, pay attention, and don’t always expect it to be dramatic. His Spirit is in you and your default is to be led.

4. Prayer is important in knowing God’s leading

Acts 13:2, among other scriptures in the Bible show us that divine direction and instruction come with prayer. When we pray, we receive clarity, and are aligned in the right path. Give attention to prayer, learn to pray about everything and anything.
