God’s Plan by Drake – A Christian’s Opinion

If you are active on social media, you would have caught the rave over Drake’s new music video. Yeah, when you decide to give out close to 1 million dollars in a music video you titled “God’s Plan”, you have gotten the attention of the world.

The tweet above was my first reaction to the video especially when I heard of quite a number of criticism and backlash at Drake for that video. So here is my opinion, a Christian’s opinion.

1. That the title of a track has a religious context, does not imply that the artist is claiming the track will give God’s mind and biblical sound interpretation on the subject.

So Drake’s God’s plan is not a song you listen to with the hopes of learning what God’s plan is for your life, for the world or for anybody.

2. That a track has a religious context does not mean it has anything to do with God or faith or spirituality.

Everyone has the creative freedom to title their work anything they deem fit. So, do not be quick to endorse a song just because the title sounds Christian.

3. Not every good work is done with a bad intention or motive.

Human beings tend to be very negative like can’t someone just show an act of kindness with no strings attached? Yeah, I know the world is full of eye service and evil intention, but when our first intention to the kind of kindness and charity showed in Drake – God’s plan is slander and criticism, I think we need to check ourselves. Don’t we actually judge others through our own lens? which is our own attitude and character.

4. That someone did something good does not make them good or cancel out all their bad deeds.

A good example here comes to mind, and that is Cornelius from the book if Act chapter 9. It was recorded that he was “a devout man who feared God with all his household, gave alms generously to the people, and prayed continually to God“, but he was asked to call Peter to tell him how he would be saved. But what is noteworthy is that Heaven acknowledged his good deeds. Act 10:4 “…Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God.

Here is my conclusion, we should recognize and commend good works, heaven does also, but we shouldn’t mistake it as a mark of doctrinal accuracy or thought leadership. That a song is titled “God’s plan” does not mean it’s to commemorate biblical truth.

Do what the Berean church did; Now the Bereans were more noble-minded than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if these teachings were true. – Act 17:11.

So many mainstream artists are seeming to do songs with Christian themes, don’t be too quick to swallow whatever they are presenting and don’t be closed minded as well, what do you do? CHECK AGAINST THE BIBLE.
