1. Inspiration
My pastor talks about creating an environment of inspiration in your spiritual walk, because you will need it! Having godly friends is important in your devotion to God because they can encourage you in the right direction.
Surrounding yourself with fire would help you stay hot. In a world of contradictions, it’s very easy to be distracted and lose your focus. Godly friends help remind you of who you are and it’s just easier when you’re doing life with the right people. (Hebrews 10:24, Hebrews 3:13).
We need friends that will stir us up and help us stay encouraged, and we need to be that kind of friend as well.
2. Accountability
You need godly friends because you need godly accountability. Surrounding yourself with other believers is a safeguard. You need friends that can help you walk with God; friends you can pray with people that can hold you to God’s standard, notice when you’re slipping, and help you in times of struggles. (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10)
I would even add that you pity anyone that’s in the process of falling and doesn’t have people to notice they’re falling or have fallen.
3. Godly Counsel
One of the most important things we would gain from friendship is opinion and advice. Hence, it is important that your close friends value the word of God, as it is the believers’ standard for what is right or wrong. It also provides wisdom for how we ought to live in this world.
Wouldn’t you want someone that would hold you accountable to God’s word and seek to correct and restore you when they see you err? Or you’d rather have a friend that doesn’t even recognize wrong as wrong. Remember that if they don’t believe in God’s standard, they can’t hold you to God’s standard.
Your relationship with God should be a priority in your life. And if it is, it should reflect in the choices you make.
