What If You Found Out God didn't Really Exist?

High resolution man drawing chart heartbeat
I had a discussion with a good friend of mine, Temitope recently where she asked me this striking and puzzling question, one I’m sure you’ve at least thought about once.
It’s not an uncommon question, it’s even a question that many popular Christian theologians have argued the sanity of asking or answering, but it is one I believe if sincerely answered, will show the place of your heart. It will be a clear test of why you are a Christian and where your heart is.
This is the question:

HOW WILL YOU FEEL If after you die you realize that all you have known and believed and was taught about God and Christianity were all false, i.e. there is no God, neither is there anything such as right or wrong, heaven or hell, how will you feel AND WHY?

That’s the question, how will you feel and WHY?
I’m sure a popular answer will be that they will feel bad and deceived, that will be mine as well, but the reason why you will feel betrayed is my focus.
Temitope’s answer is what gave rise to this post. And here it is:

I’ll be disappointed. I’ll feel like I wasted my life getting to know someone that doesn’t exist. Like I fell in love with nothing.

Basically life would have been a waste. I’ll question everything about my existence, every decision I made, every opportunity I turned down, every prayer, every love, every worship, every song, every feeling, everything I heard in my spirit, question myself. I’ll just be lost.

Temitope’s answer to this question struck me because it poses the idea that her faith in God and her Christian walk is more of a relationship with a person, a love for someone she knows exists even if she cannot see Him. Above all, she has built her life and made decisions based on this belief in this unseen God.
Now, compare this to an answer to the question that goes like this;
I will regret not having lived my life for the things I want to do, go party with my friends; make money like others did (fraudulently). I’ll regret having kept my body from sexual sins….
To the person whose answer is like the above statement, I won’t be wrong to conclude that his/her faith walk and relationship with God is more of an activity base, keeping some set of rules to avoid being punished by this unseen God.
Of course, our faith in God will place demands on our choices and lifestyle. It will prevent us from living like the rest of the world, but that won’t be because we are afraid of being punished (hell fire being the major), but because we know the person we are serving and our love and honour for Him will not let us do things that will interfere or affect our relationship with them.
I want to implore you to answer the question, “If you are told today that there is no God, what will your regret be about the time you’ve worshiped Him”?
And I hope your answer will shed a light on the state of your heart and the actual reason you are following or worshiping Him.
I hope it will be one like Temitope’s that will prove your sincere love and devotion to Him as a person, realising your lost and helpless state and thus your need for Him for your every breath and every moment. And I hope it won’t be as if we see God as a means to an end- an escape from hell fire and eternal punishment or a means to prosperity and a better life here on earth.

I’ll love to read your feedback, scroll down to leave a comment.
