While having a discussion with a friend of mine, I asked what her greatest fear was and she said it was the fear of getting married. I particularly couldn’t lay hold on what the reason was, maybe an experience from her parents’ marriage, or the statistics of the likelihood of only one of every first marriage to survive divorce in the United States. Her reason maybe personal but I was able to relate with the fear because I once had the fear too.
I was listening to a message on marriage by a renowned preacher who said a wrong marriage (marrying the wrong person) is practically a torture, a hell on earth. (read my post “the place called dark” to see the gravity of this). I just could not imagine living in hell from like the age of 26/27 till death do “us” part because divorce is not an option for me. This created fear in me.
A simple action of faith inspired by the word of God freed me from the bondage of fear.
1 Peter 5:7 (AMP) Casting the whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully.
That was exactly what I did, I cast all my fears, worries and anxiety about a failed marriage or about marrying the wrong person all over to God. I gave Him in a simple act of prayer. Taking His word to him “I am the Lord your God, Who teaches you to profit, Who leads you in the way that you should go” Isa 46: 17 and that was it.
If I gave it up, I don’t have it anymore. It is not that I don’t remember the fear, but when I do, I just remind myself of his promise not to break his covenant. “…by two unchangeable things [His promise and His oath] in which it is impossible for God to lie…Heb 6:18”
The same goes for any kind of fear, worries or anxiety you have. Paul said “Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. (MSG). Phil 4:6. Jesus made a rather scary “too-good-to-be-true” statement in his first open air crusade matt 6: 25-32
Matthew 6:25-31 (TLB) 25 “So my counsel is: Don’t worry about things–food, drink, and clothes. For you already have life and a body–and they are far more important than what to eat and wear. 26 Look at the birds! They don’t worry about what to eat–they don’t need to sow or reap or store up food–for your heavenly Father feeds them. And you are far more valuable to him than they are. 27 Will all your worries add a single moment to your life? 28 “And why worry about your clothes? Look at the field lilies! They don’t worry about theirs. 29 Yet King Solomon in all his glory was not clothed as beautifully as they. 30 And if God cares so wonderfully for flowers that are here today and gone tomorrow, won’t he more surely care for you, O men of little faith?
3132 “So don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them,
Next time your catch yourself struck down by a care or worry simply remind yourself that the God who created and owns all things cares for you and knows that you need them. If the birds and the grass, as valuable as you are compared to them, get their constant needs met without stress, in the words of Jesus “How much more you?”
