Addictions are hard to overcome. They can affect our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. They can also damage our relationships, careers, and reputations. But there is hope. There is a way out. There is a power greater than ourselves that can help us break free from the chains of addiction.
In this blog post, we will share some stories from real people who have dealt with different kinds of addictions and how they overcame them. These stories are not meant to be prescriptive or definitive, but rather inspirational and motivational. They show us that we are not alone in our struggles and that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Ihilesen: Seek Support and Accountability
I told as many believing friends what I was going through and got accountability partners, it helped that I could talk to my Pastors and church leaders, I learnt never to suffer or struggle in silence I always shared.
What we can learn: One of the most important steps in overcoming addiction is to admit that we have a problem and seek help. We cannot do it on our own. We need the support and guidance of others who care about us and who can hold us accountable. We also need to be honest and transparent with ourselves and with God.

Ummm…whatever you focus on grows… If there are bad addictions, replace them with good ones (The word, Prayer, affirmations, good relationships that spur you on to good) and keep yourself busy…not idle… You literally have 24 hours in a day… Plus when I realize I don’t have forever to live for…We need to live for what matters most, and not for what gratifies our flesh.
What we can learn: Another key to overcoming addiction is to change our focus and our habits. We need to replace the negative and harmful things that we are addicted to with positive and beneficial things that will help us grow and thrive. We need to fill our minds and hearts with the word of God, prayer, affirmations, and good relationships that spur us on to good. We also need to keep ourselves busy with productive and meaningful activities that align with our purpose and calling. We need to remember that we have a limited time on earth, but an eternal destiny in heaven. We need to live for what matters most, and not for what gratifies our flesh.

Not really an addiction for me but I had to cut off communication with some people that encouraged some bad habits and after a while I completely forgot about the habits. However, the thing with cutting off the ties was that I replaced them with other friends so I wasn’t really tempted to reach out again.
What we can learn: Sometimes, the people we associate with can influence our choices and behaviors. If we want to overcome addiction, we may need to cut off communication with some people who encourage or enable our bad habits. We may need to distance ourselves from toxic and unhealthy relationships that drag us down. But we also need to replace them with other friends who will uplift and support us. We need to surround ourselves with positive and godly influences who will help us stay on the right track.

These three practices are essential for anyone who wants to overcome addiction. Accountability means having someone who knows your struggles, checks on you regularly, and helps you stay on track. Word study means reading, meditating, and applying the word of God to your life. Prayer means communicating with God, asking for His help, confessing your sins, and thanking Him for His grace. These three practices will help you grow in your faith, renew your mind, and strengthen your spirit.

I told myself that I carry the Holy Spirit and whatever I did, I was making the Holy Spirit witness and participate and over time, the addiction just irked me till I completely stopped.
One of the most powerful truths that can help you overcome addiction is that you carry the Holy Spirit within you. As a believer, you are the temple of God, and the Spirit of God dwells in you. This means that whatever you do, you are involving the Holy Spirit in it. You are making Him witness and participate in your actions. This should make you think twice before you indulge in any addictive behavior. How would the Holy Spirit feel about it? How would He react to it? How would He help you resist it? The more you are aware of the Holy Spirit’s presence and power in your life, the more you will hate what He hates and love what He loves.

I was first wondering why it wouldn’t go after being a believer 😢. It was God’s presence. As we expose ourselves to prayers and word of God, things shed off. I still made mistakes of falling and I cried, got tired, sad.. but I couldn’t run away from God. He alone can fix. I restricted what I watch... mount zion movies or Christian movies all the way. Sometimes, I had to run away from being alone. Dependence on God is all!
The ultimate source of victory over addiction is God’s presence. As we expose ourselves to His presence through prayers and His word, things shed off. We are transformed by His glory and grace. We are healed by His love and mercy. We are delivered by His power and authority. We are not perfect, and we may still make mistakes, but we can always run to God. He alone can fix us. He alone can satisfy us. He alone can free us. Dependence on God is all.

I think it was reading Rom 6-8 that did it for me. I became so confident in who I am in Christ so I kept reminding myself and confessing it.
One of the most effective ways to overcome addiction is to confess your identity in Christ. Romans 6-8 is a great passage that reveals who you are in Christ and what He has done for you. You are dead to sin and alive to God. You are free from the law and under grace. You are not in the flesh but in the Spirit. You are not condemned but justified. You are not a slave but a son. You are not a victim but a victor. You are not a loser but a winner. You are not an addict but an overcomer. By reminding yourself and confessing these truths, you are renewing your mind and changing your perspective. You are not letting your addiction define you, but you are defining yourself by your addiction to Christ.

Avoided my triggers like a plague, surrounded myself with things and people that edify, Prayer: will give you strength over the flesh and its desires Once you decide to burn those bridges, never look back or compromise. Just glide with Jesus strength from prayer and the word makes it easy to flee and resist
One of the most practical ways to overcome addiction is to avoid your triggers and surround yourself with edifying things. Triggers are anything that can tempt you or remind you of your addiction. They can be people, places, situations, or even thoughts and feelings. By avoiding your triggers like a plague, you are minimizing the chances of relapsing or giving in to your addiction. Instead, you should surround yourself with things and people that edify you, that is, that build you up, inspire you, and challenge you to grow. These can be godly friends, mentors, books, music, podcasts, or anything that helps you focus on God and His will for your life. Prayer is also a powerful weapon against addiction, as it gives you strength over the flesh and its desires.

Honestly, I just stopped dealing with it. Mine was sex. It wasn’t an addiction per say but it was just something I was deeply involved in. After multiple falling backs and being too conscious of it, I just said I was tired. My Bible tells me I have overcome. I just focused on my walk with God. And then began to surround myself with people and things who always pointed me to the things of God. I didn’t even intentionally avoid things that tempted me. My entire being just stopped agreeing. The words really has the power to transform.
Another point on how to overcome addiction is to stop dealing with it and focus on your walk with God. Addiction can become a burden, a struggle, a fight that drains your energy and joy. By stopping dealing with it, you are letting go of the addiction and its hold on you. You are also acknowledging that you are tired of it and that you want a change. You are claiming the truth that you have overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of your testimony. You are focusing on your walk with God, your relationship with Him, and your growth in Him. You are also surrounding yourself with people and things that point you to the things of God, that remind you of His love, His promises, and His plans for you. You are not even intentionally avoiding things that tempt you, but your entire being just stops agreeing with them. You are experiencing the power of the word of God to transform you from the inside out.
sambanzy: Lay It at the Master’s Feet and Take Your Mind Off It
I laid it at the master’s feet and took my mind off it, had that assurance the power of God dwelling in me could take care of it. Made conscious effort to steer away from temptations. I was like “God, I’m tired of struggling with this, Holy Spirit take over”. Took my mind off the sin, fixed my eyes on Jesus. Works every damn time with sincerity of heart. do not allow yourself to be dragged back in, don’t play around the edges of such sin, never indulge temptations. @sambanzy affirming words too works, the words overtime becomes the subconscious state of mind
One of the most liberating ways to overcome addiction is to lay it at the master’s feet and take your mind off it. Addiction can become a heavy burden, a constant struggle, a hopeless situation. You are inviting the Holy Spirit to take over and to empower you to overcome. By taking your mind off the sin, you are not giving it any attention or power over you. You are also fixing your eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith, the one who died for you and rose again, the one who loves you and wants the best for you. By doing this, you are experiencing the peace and joy that comes from God’s presence and grace. You are also making a conscious effort to steer away from temptations, to not allow yourself to be dragged back in, to not play around the edges of such sin, and to never indulge temptations.
