How to React When A Christian Sins?

I tweeted something recently about how a certain song group has blessed me over the years. Someone replied the tweet with a link of a post somewhere of how one of the leaders of this group was involved in some scandal.

This was my reply, “I’m not sure I want to read this but if it’s what I’m thinking and a key person in xxxxxx has done something terrible…That actually makes no difference to me. xxxxxx has been /is/ and continually would be a blessing to me. Their songs and giftings is apart from the people…”

This didn’t mean I endorsed the wrong but I have learned to treat people with grace. Every time, I read or think on the story of Jesus and the Adulterous woman, I am greatly humbled. That is how to treat people. Jesus didn’t endorse her wrong but he extended his love and grace to her. And after that day, her life was never the same.

How about the Samaritan woman? Her’s is the most amazing. Many believers today aware of the sinful past of this woman would not have even engaged her the way Jesus dad. But Jesus handled people’s pasts with grace, we too ought to do the same.

I know you’d say, “Well, this is supposed to be a Christian!”

I agree with you but that does not make them less human, even pastors. They are as prone to sin as anyone who is in this flesh.

Firstly, we need to be sure our faith is in God and not in his ministers. It is men that can miss it, God doesn’t. God is ever faithful and so our eyes should always be on Him.

I also have heard people use certain people as a yardstick. So if my music director or prayer leader can do it, then I can and again, I wonder, “Whom do you really follow?” We need to see pastors as humans and understand that they are as prone as anyone else.

This is a reminder to treat people with grace. Just as Jesus did. Do not be that sister that would be quick to broadcast the failings of her brother or sister in Christ. Do not be that brother who would sub a brother or sister because of their shortcoming.

When we became born again, we were born into a new family. The same way you protect the shame of your earthly siblings, so likewise for your spiritual siblings.

This is not to say sin should be covered and condone. It should be addressed within the church and the person should be treated with grace especially after showing fruits of repentance.

Be like Jesus, don’t judge people by their past, learn to handle the past of other believers with grace.
