Husband and Wife Duties in a Dating Relationship?

A dating relationship is not so far apart from a friendship. It’s getting to know someone in a more intimate way. Some people believe that certain things should not be done in a dating relationship. These things are termed as “husband and wife duties”. We wonder why.

We have observed that society tends to paint a dating relationship as 100 times different from a regular friendship. Yet, many of  us don’t realise that dating is a friendship with romance. But the larger part is… you guessed right – Friendship!

Of course, there are certain things that should not be done in a relationship, sex being at the top of the chart. In fact, it seems like sex is the only thing that is “husband and wife duties” in a relationship. Concerning the topic of sex, we’ve written extensively about it here

Another thing people deem to be husband and wife duties in a relationship is cohabitation. You can read about it here and here

Other perceived “husband and wife duties” we have gathered include:

1. Cooking

Some people are of the opinion that they cannot cook for their partner in a dating relationship. Our question to you is, if your friend comes to your house and is hungry, would you cook for them?

So why would you consider cooking for your beloved as something to be reserved till marriage?

2. Sending Money

We also found out some people send their partner’s siblings or parents money when they are not yet married. Some circumstances may warrant it, but we would like to sound a note of caution here:

Do not give your would-be in-laws money as a bid to win their hearts. Do it out of the goodness of your heart so that if you don’t end up marrying their child, you won’t feel taken advantage of by them.

Do you help your friends pick up supplies from the mall/market? How about buying them things when you go visiting? Not a big deal, right?

Some people are of the opinion that the above examples are different from going to the market to restock your partner’s kitchen. So the question is, is it okay to do major shopping for one’s partner or not? Please comment below.

We have also been told by some that they consider going to the market with their partner in a dating relationship a “husband and wife duty”. What do you guys think?

4. Doing Laundry

Except they are ill, is there any reason why one should wash clothes for someone they are not married to? The jury is still out on this one.

5. Paying Their House Rent/School Fees

The things you would do for a loved one applies to the person you are dating as well. Sometimes, it might be helping to pay their rent or school fees (if you are capable, that is).

At the end of the day, what matters is that you treat your partner well. Like we said, apart from having sex with them or living together, we find that other “duties” that apply are quite nuanced in their application.

Are there certain actions you will term  “husband and wife duties” in a dating relationship? Please share them with us in the comments section below.
