Every great achiever is inspired by a great mentor. – Lailah Gifty Akita
Hello friends, I welcome you to another session of IGNITE SERIES. Year 2016 has been a wonderful year thus far, don’t be left behind.
Everything that becomes significant was once in a state of “Tabula Raza”- Clean State until something productive was made out of it. Today we shall be looking at ON HIS SHOULDER. One thing that predicts people’s success is their ability to hold on to specific principles that generates sustainable result. The place of mentorship in self-development is very crucial, great leaders are those who add other genuine leader’s strength to theirs.
I’ve found that most people who have become successful in life are proud to share their knowledge and experience. A mentor is an adviser, coach or teacher. I want you to know that a mentor is not a replacement for action but only a source of inspiration and information.
One of the key to my success in life thus far is the high value I have placed on my mentors. At every stage in my life, I have mentors whom I draw knowledge, virtues and instructions from. Academic excellence became so cheap for me because I have superiors who have experienced this exploits and have learnt the principles from them. Let me share with you some important things you need to know about mentorship;
-
Mentors show protégé the way
As I said earlier on, mentors are those who have gone ahead and have obtained the promise, so when you subscribe fully to their learning, you won’t make the mistakes they have made but by simply making their challenges your stepping stone.
- Your mentor is your guardian and not a carbon copy of you
This has constituted a big challenge in the school of mentorship, God makes original things and there is no duplicate; your mentor is someone that has similar vision or assignments with you. The essence of mentorship is not to be a carbon copy of the person but a guide. If you do only what your mentors does then you can’t stand at the highest peak but at the same plain, you must decide to boldly go where no one has gone; that is what creativity thoroughly means and without creativity standing at the highest peak is not possible.
- Mentors position protégé
There was a mentorship relationship recorded in the Bible, we know the story of the 4 Hebrew boys, the 3 protégés (Meshach, Shedrach and Abednego) with their mentor (Daniel). Daniel 2:48-49 tells us how Daniel positioned his 3 protégés by telling king Nebuchadnezzar to put them in charge of the affairs of the province of Babylon immediately after he was made the ruler of the whole province of Babylon as well as the chief over all the wise men. Hence your mentors position you via prayer, mentally and other means. Standing at the highest peak connotes standing on someone’s shoulder.
In conclusion, humility is highly required for a successful mentorship relationship. The wise humble themselves to learn. Isaac newton once said “I see farther because am standing on the shoulders of those who have gone ahead of me”. Honour your mentors and above all have a mentor
I am looking forward to seeing you next week. Have a productive week.
From your Coach.
