WHY 30 IS NOT THE NEW 20 – Dr. Meg Jay

As a culture, we have trivialized what is actually the most defining decade of adulthood.

In my years of therapy, I have had young adults in their late twenties and early thirties who admit to the fact that they have made wrong decision and under-maximised their adolescent years. A young lady once confessed to how dating in her twenties was like playing a game of musical chairs where ‘everyone is dancing around and having fun.’ But then sometime around thirty, it was like the music turned off and everyone started sitting down. I didn’t want to be the only one left standing up so sometimes I think I married my husband because he was the closest chair to me at thirty’.

Word to the twenty-somethings, ‘DO NOT DO THAT’.

Make no mistake, when a lot has been pushed to your thirties, there becomes enormous thirty-something pressure to jump start a career, to pick a city, partner-up and have 2 or 3 kids, all in a much shorter period of time. Do something that adds value to who you are. Do something that is an investment to who you might want to be next. Now is the time for that job, that internship, that start-up you want to try. The time to start picking your family is now.

The truth is that a lot of connections in your life may not necessarily come directly from your inner circle….friends of friends of friends perhaps. So, Claim your adulthood.
