I is for INTEGRITY
I is the second letter in SIGNIFICANCE. This week on the journey to significance we will be looking at integrity.
Integrity is simply doing the right thing at all times. It is one of the critical attributes for living a life of significance.
Doing what is right relates a lot with our values. We can claim to be good but are we really good, holy, upright, Moral, Noble, straight forward, considerate and kind all of the time with everyone and in all we do? We set our own standards of behavior and we need to Live it consistently and teach others who believe in those standards too.
Having integrity is living in accordance to your system of values, it is being confident to stand for the truth; keeping to your word and being honest with everyone.
Our society today with its different culture, religion and history has made living with integrity difficult. Our society is polluted such that Bribery and corruption is now a normal way of life, Dishonesty, lies and injustice have become integral parts of our societal values. This is wrong, As a matter of fact, integrity is not as easy as it seems neither is it as clear as we’ll like it to be. Integrity is being able to live and die for what is right no matter what.
With the way things are, you can’t be judgmental about your “right” being more “right.” People may just feel the same about you. You make it balance and clear by acting and making decisions not just for your good but for the common good. You decide to act seeing integrity as nonnegotiable while, at the same time, liberally understand that people view the same truth differently. Not everything you find within yourself and others is pleasing, and not everything that you believe at any given time is true. You choose to be credible beyond reproach and accept that others try to also.
Integrity also presumes a basic level of honesty, you need to be willing to look at yourself, question what you think you know, and to continually look for proof that what you believe to be true is actually true. This will take courage and some level of self-confidence.
To develop and protect your integrity, identify your core values. These are your nonnegotiable values, they are values that you refuse to compromise on, Next, analyze every choice you make to ensure that you’re doing the right thing. Life is a choice remember. Then, develop an attitude of integrity around you; work with integrity, build your self-confidence and develop associations that will help you live a life of integrity.
You can do a self-reflection now. Simply decide what is right for you, write it down, date it, keep it and refer to it later. You need to add integrity to your personal values and develop personal code of conduct that you will live by. For example you can say “I will never engage in Malpractices”, “I will take responsibility for my actions and act with all honesty in everything I do” etc. This will go a long way to define your character and help you with living a life of integrity. A code of ethics can be personal or can be corporate. The fact is to have one that works personally and professionally for you. Think carefully, about what really matters to you for your own growth and development.
Write your values down and paste it everywhere so that people will know what you stand for and anytime you deviate from it, they will call you to order. It will make people to be able to judge you by what you say.
To live with integrity is to literally integrate what you think, know and believe with what you say and to integrate what you say with what you do. Living with integrity is not just something you have, but something that you do.
Integrity has been associated with a state of being sound, whole, doing right, and soundness of moral character. It won’t be wrong to say that it takes some level of Insanity not to live a life of integrity.
In the words of Alan Simpson, “If you have integrity, nothing else matters. If you don’t have integrity, nothing else matters”
Have a great week.
