Jesus Is Coming Back. Yaay, Nah or Wait?

Jesus is coming back again! What’s your reaction to this declaration? Joy, awe, a raised eyebrow, a scowl or disbelief? Some Christians are like “Yaaaay! But can He chill? I haven’t married yet” (what we actually mean is “I haven’t had sex yet and I can’t unless I’m married” ).

The subject of Jesus coming again as proclaimed by Christians is a popular fact in the world. Christians (as rightly expected) anticipate it joyfully because it depicts a time when we will be caught up in the sky to meet with Him. A time when we (whether alive or asleep) will be freed of the chaos in this world.

Non-Christians generally take this prophecy with a pinch of salt. They say something similar to – “If Jesus was coming back again, why isn’t He back already?” I once heard someone say, “They’ve been saying He will come back again for more than 2000 years now but He hasn’t come back. Therefore, He’s definitely not coming back.”

I was taken aback by this line of thinking because it is obviously flawed. Just because someone isn’t back as promised doesn’t mean he will never be back. The right question to ask is “Why isn’t he back?”

He isn’t back because between his ascension and second coming, there’s a period in which He wants to gather all men unto Him. That period is the one in which we presently live – the church age. The church age is a period of grace and the long-suffering of God (2 Peter 3:9). A period where humanity is given an opportunity to choose God through Christ Jesus. It seems prolonged.

However, it is so that every mouth will be stopped before God during Judgement day. No one will have an excuse for not believing in the Gospel because everyone will have an opportunity to hear about it. This is the period where believers in Christ are to ensure they preach the Gospel with all their might. This is the period we are to entreat others to be reconciled to God before destruction comes.

That the coming of Jesus seems delayed is not far-fetched. Jesus Himself already gave an explanation for this. In Matthew 24:36, He said, “But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.”

What was up in the days of Noah? Matthew 24:38-39 NKJV tells us – For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.

Let’s do some calculation. Between the time Shem, Ham and Japheth were born (Genesis 5:32) and the coming of the Flood is a hundred years (Genesis 7:11). By the time God told Noah to build an ark, his children were married (Genesis 6:18). They had to be old enough to be married, at least 25 -30 years old. That leaves out 75 – 70 years before the flood. That’s a long time.

Imagine how Noah must have looked building an ark for an incoming flood at a time when they never experienced rain. Most likely stupid. We don’t know how long it took Noah to finish the ark, but it is safe to assume that it took a while (all the workforce he had must have been limited to him and his sons). Even if the ark was finished within a few years, the flood didn’t come until Noah was six hundred years old. Life would have continued as normal as it did back then. The same way it is right now. Just as Jesus predicted.

Noah expected the flood for approximately 70 years! He must have been laughed to scorn by onlookers. We know because only his family went into the ark. Only his family believed God and were saved from destruction. We have anticipated the coming of Jesus for more than two thousand years collectively as the church. It’s not for nothing. Peter calls it the long-suffering of God for the Salvation of souls (1 Peter 3:20-21). Therefore, it’s not for us to wonder when Jesus is to come, it’s for us to ensure that when He comes, many would have had an opportunity to hear the Gospel and be saved. Otherwise, just like in the days of Noah, it will be too late for them to enter the ark (to be in Christ).

He will be back. You can bet on it. He’s one who has consistently kept to his word. He said He will die and rise again, Yes! he did so If He said He will be back, you can bet on it.

The question is: “Will you be ready?” If you haven’t believed the Gospel, you are not ready. If you have, do preach so that others will be saved.
