Are You In Conflict With Your Parents? Read this

1

As we grow older, there’ll be a desire to understand things about yourself, your path, especially with God communicating an assignment to you. You’ll need to move toward that direction and many times, you expect that your parents will pat your back and give you unwavering support. However, you’ll get shocked when you realise they think you are making a joke of your life by taking those steps and more so the devastation conflict with your parents can cause.

Whether we choose to admit or not, not having parental support for what you want to do is hurtful and is really hard when you have not gained solid independence. In fact, it can be discouraging and may lead to you second-guessing yourself. This is not because you are a person of weak character; it just means you are a normal youth who just wants to be responsible for his (or her) life.

It is normal because your parents have always been there; when you took your first steps, when you got some academic or sports achievements, when you needed to write promotional exams. Where did all the support fly to? Well, I don’t know. However,

I know that they love you:

I know it doesn’t seem like it, especially now you are in conflict with your parents but hear it- they love you- even though their actions don’t obviously signal so. Look at things from their angle; they are probably not as exposed as you are, their generation was quite different from yours. It’s not really easy for them to accept your non-traditional path. In fact, it’s a sign of care that they are so concerned. They don’t want you to ‘miss it’. Forgive their actions.

I know that you should have clarity on the steps you are taking:

Be sure of what you are doing. That is being responsible. Though we get clarity as we take steps, there are some things you should be sure of before taking that first step. Have you prayed about it? Have you sought counsel? Are you just bored? Or you just want to be spontaneous? Be responsible for your life and for your decisions.

I know that you should note the reasons behind the steps you have decided to take:

Is it because you just want to prove to your parents that you are now an adult so you can do whatever you want? Is it because that’s what is in vogue or because that is what God wants for you right now? Relax, breathe, think, pray and do what you need to do. Sometimes, what you are supposed to do is to ‘wait’ and that’s fine.

I know that you don’t have anything to prove to anyone:

When stepping out on your own, you may make mistakes, you may take detours, don’t feel discouraged. Don’t be under pressure to prove your parents wrong. Don’t thrive so hard for success just so you can show your parents that they were wrong all along. Failing is part of the journey, that’s not what defines you. Christ defines you; your life is made to please Him, not to prove a point to everyone.

I know that you will be alright.

Your parents will be alright too. Ensure you learn from the process, you will be alright.
