Cautions on Personal Branding and Selling Yourself On Social Media

The advent of social media has aided personal branding in a big way. We can share our lives and achievements with thousands (maybe even millions) depending on the social media platform and user dexterity. “Selling one’s market” has never been so easy and many people have attributed a career change, a promotion at work and business success to their social media interactions. On the other hand, it has also provided an avenue for self-aggrandizement, deception and other related vices.

While all these vices may be all well and good for an unbeliever as long as the end justifies the means, the story is different for a Christian.

Personal branding even on social media should not negate our Christian values neither should it undermine what the word of God has to say about how we ought to conduct ourselves in this world.

We don’t have to embellish our online lives in order to gain recognition or attract success. Therefore, as you post and advertise about your achievement and try to sell have the following tips at the back of your mind. They will help you maintain the right heart as you seek to attract some economic or social advantage to yourself.

Don’t lie about your achievements or embellish them.

In the first place, a child of God should not lie (Ephesians 2:25). Secondly, you don’t want to put yourself out there as an expert when you are still learning the ropes of your profession/trade.

For example, saying you are an experienced project manager when you’ve only handled one or two projects is stretching the truth. Find out what constitutes expertise in your field and work towards it. It can include some level of experience, certifications, continuous education and so on. Get them.

Recognize those who sharpened your skills or gave you a platform to shine.

These people have been a great source of encouragement to you. Some of them did not necessarily teach you what you know but have been a huge support to you in one way or another. Credit them in your posts, thank them publicly and sing their praises privately. It brings honour to a person. (Proverbs 29:23).

Do things having others in mind.

Selfless acts that are posted on social media platforms are easily discerned by their mode of presentation. Do you find yourself raising your eyebrows when some celebrities post about how they spent their birthday at an orphanage? You might wonder whether they are just being philanthropic or merely fishing for compliments.  The most selfless act of love was carried out by Jesus and yet He commissioned others to proclaim it with signs and wonders following (Matthew 28:18-20).

Everybody does not have to know that you fed five thousand people with five loaves of bread (1 Corinthians 13:4). Please note that this point may not apply to organizations or individuals engaged in charitable activities as there has to be evidence of activities for the sake of sponsorship.

Promote other people work.

You know people who are amazing at what they do. Share their work or refer people to them. It’s the least you can do to lend a helping hand (1 Corinthians 13:5).

Be diligent.

After landing an advantage through your social media prowess, ensure that you are diligent in carrying it out as the results you achieve is what will matter at the end of the day.

The book of Proverbs is replete with the virtues of diligence; it makes one rich (10:4), helps one find favour (11:27), makes one rule (12:24), leads to plenty (21:5) among others. Lastly, Chapter 22:29 reads; Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before unknown men.

All of God’s best as you pursue after your dreams.
