Christianity and Activism – A Moral Instruction

Today, January 15, Nigerian rapper, actor and activist Falz the Bad Guy drops his album Moral instruction and he is already being lauded for his boldness in addressing very serious societal issues. Many have gone as far as comparing him to the late musician, human rights activist and social commentator Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

What should be a Christian’s reaction to this?

Honestly, as a Christian, you must not turn a blind eye or deaf ears to the ills in society, to the best of your ability you must speak up when necessary.

To be honest we have an example in Jesus of speaking up to injustice. But like every aspect of your life as a Christian, your reactions must be controlled by scriptures.

Below are some points to guide you, as you lend your voice to the many struggles of the 21st century: feminism, political injustice, gender inequality……..

1. Mind Your Language

Coarse and foolish talking or crude joking are not suitable, but rather giving thanks. –  Ephesians 5:4 (HSCB)

In the book of Ephesians Paul gives an instruction about foolish talking or crude joking. This implies that whatever platform you choose to channel your grievances, never forget to watch your language.

Beware of speaking loosely on social media in the name of supporting a struggle. A Christian is marked by self-control and this is seen in the way he/she speaks and behaves, even in the face of obvious provocation.

2. Scrutinize every struggle with the lenses of Your Faith

This is the more important of the two points I intend to make in this article. Whatever movement you choose to follow must be scrutinized by what you believe as a Christian. The things you claim to support must properly line up with the Bible’s teachings and you must never be indifferent about this.

For example, knowing the Bible’s stance, I don’t believe it is appropriate for a Christian to be an advocate for the LGBTQ community that is definitely not your struggle. Is this me saying that you should hate those who belong to that community or other similar communities, not at all.

As a believer, your response to movements that are anti-gospel is to as best as you can seek to reach out with the gospel’s message.

You must not show indifference, but rather with love let them know the truth. So as a Christian you must not line up with individuals or movements that oppose your profession as a Christian.

There are certain movements or activists that directly attack your beliefs as a Christian, you must try not to be sentimental because as believers our faith is the focal point from where we analyze every other thing.
