How Not to Be a Victim of Revenge Porn

New to the term, ‘Revenge Porn’? So was I prior to writing this article, but Revenge Porn is definitely not a concept you are unaware of, and neither are you immune to it, except of course you have never and will never do the following;

  • Send a nude picture or video to anyone.
  • Have a nude or video picture on your devices.
  • Put yourself in a situation where your nude picture can be taken (e.g. getting drunk or being a member of the Big Brother House)

and so on

So, what is Revenge Porn? Pretty simple, it is when someone turns your nude pictures or video into pornography in a bid to take revenge.

Let me explain, not every pornographic video on the internet was filmed with the consent of the person in it, some were simply an act of revenge for whatever reason.

The first time I heard about this term was from a Ted Talk where the lady, while about to give a speech somewhere got a call and her friend sent her a link to a website and asked her to check it. It turned out that her ex had posted nude pictures he took while she was sleeping when they were still dating.

Picture it like this, you were in love with a guy, oh, you love each other so much. You trusted him with your heart, how much less naked pictures, or let’s assume you are not the type that sends naked pictures. But you take them, and just keep them somewhere on your phone, and the love of your life has access to your phone’s password, so he checks them on your phone. Until somewhere down the line, you had a bad breakup, just imagine a terrible scenario where the guy was really hurt, and as a revenge, your naked picture or video ends up on the internet.

So, how do you ensure that you are not a victim of revenge porn;

  1. Don’t Take Nudes

If you don’t have any naked pictures or video of yourself, then you have no reason to worry about them ending up on the internet. Simple enough? If you have at the moment, (we’ll get there), but don’t take any other.

  1. If you will take a naked picture, DON’T HAVE YOUR FACE ON IT

After all, how will the world recognize your private part as yours if it doesn’t include your face?

Hey! Before you judge me for encouraging people to take nude pictures, I’m including this point because, I remember a time I had to send a nude picture to my Medical Doctor sister when I noticed something unusual on my skin at a very private area, so yeah, if you must take a nude, please keep your face from it.

  1. Don’t Get Drunk

Lol, there are a lot of naked pictures that the owners of the nudes would be seeing for the first time on the internet, simply because they didn’t take the picture, they were drunk or sleeping (we’ll get there) while the picture or video was taken.

This is one of the many reasons why the abuse of alcohol is highly discouraged. Whether drinking alcohol is a sin or not should not be the argument, but is it beneficial. Losing control of your mind is in no way beneficial to you.

 But IF you are going to get drunk, (which means if you are going to drink at all), please have your trusted friends around or be in a safe location, not at a bar, in a club or on the road.

  1. Don’t Play House (boyfriend’s house or Big Brother House)

I have read stories of landlords and house owners installing secret cameras in their tenants houses, pray you don’t fall victim of such a case, and make sure you don’t put yourself in such a situation, which can come in different ways; sleeping over where it isn’t your house, being on shows where cameras are installed in areas that should be private.

And if you will live with a boyfriend or girlfriend, it becomes very hard if not impossible for them not to see you naked or almost naked. So, if you don’t want to be a victim of revenge porn, don’t play house.

I should also add that we have seen cases where the sweetest love goes sour, except you are married to him or her, you are never safe.

  1. Don’t Date an Unbeliever

I mentioned that I was writing this article to a friend, and she asked me, “Do Christians do that?”, you answer that. But I want to believe that a believer guided by the spirit and the word will not, ask for nudes or send them. So, dating a true believer saves you from the temptation to take or send nudes. Or a worst case, their tendency to post them on the internet when you break up, lol.

Dating a true believer saves you from the temptation to take or send nudes. A true Christian shouldn't ask you for nudes. It's just the way dating a Christian limits the temptation to fall into sexual sins. Click To Tweet

It’s just the way dating a Christian limits your probability of falling into sexual sins. I know it happens, we are flesh and still susceptible sometimes, but a believer will not make a habit of it. And if they fall victim, they remind themselves that Christ has paid for their sins with His blood, so they don’t remain in guilt.

  1. Don’t Keep Your Nude on an Insecure Device or Network.

There are cases where a person’s email or device is hacked and the hacker posts the illicit content on the internet, so, be mindful where you save or keep your nudes, but to avoid a headache, just don’t have any.

I read an article that suggests that you watermark your nude with the name of the person you are sending it to, hahaha, very nice idea, that way, if you find it on the internet, you will know who leaked it. But I am not listing this as a point, because why are you sending someone who isn’t your husband or wife your naked picture or video?

I guess some people are going to beg their partner or ex(es) to not post their nudes on the internet, lol, but jokes asides, let me address the people who leak others nude.

If you have watched the series “13 Reasons Why”, you’ll know the lethal effect of spreading someone’s nude. It led to the suicide of a girl in the series.

Yes, we have adviced people not to take nudes, but if you are in custody or stumble on anybody’s naked picture, please don’t share it. There will never be a good reason to do such. And I believe it is criminal to blackmail someone, threatening them because you have their naked picture in your custody.

If someone is trying to blackmail you because they have your nude, please report to the police.

So, what if you have naked pictures at the moment, delete them, secure them, and if you have sent it out, hmm, may God help you.

There will never be a good reason to send your naked picture to the person you are dating. Never! We all know why people send nude and it’s purely immoral. So as much as this article has shared some ways to not be caught in the web of revenge porn, please don’t take or send nudes, it doesn’t glorify God and shouldn’t be mentioned among believers.

If your partner that you aren’t married to is pressuring you for nude, tell them to wait till you are married, otherwise, no show.
