The Nigerian version of the Big Brother reality TV show is about to begin its fourth season. The auditions are already on the way to select the next set of housemates.
Personally, I have never watched any of the Big Brother Nigeria seasons and I have no intentions to. You might ask why. Am I just a boring prude? No, I am not a boring prude, I am a Christian. I don’t think I should find a show where people are kissing in the shower, having sex in the toilet and having wild late night parties appealing.
I don't think I should find a show where people are kissing in the shower, having sex in the toilet and having wild late night parties appealing. Click To TweetHow do I know all of these if I have never watched the show before? Well, let us just say that once the show starts, there are many Big Brother evangelists and advocates everywhere trying to preach the Big Brother gospel to you. Nowhere is safe, on social media, there are videos everywhere of things happening in the house.
Virtually every day while the show is on, either the show or one of the housemate’s trends on Twitter, because of how many people are speaking about it.
In offices, homes, schools and on the streets, every young person seems to be talking about the Big Brother show. It makes me imagine, if so many people spoke about Jesus like this, we would see more people get saved and more people coming to know who Jesus really is. But that is just me allowing my imagination to run wild, the world is set on the things it finds appealing.
If so many people spoke about Jesus like they do about Big Brother or other reality shows we would see more people get saved and more people coming to know who Jesus really is. Click To TweetThis article is not written to address whether or not it is appropriate to watch the Big Brother show. Although, I believe if you are serious about guarding your heart like the scriptures prescribe, a show that is rated 18 for sexual content and language should not appeal to you.
This article was written to answer the question of if it is appropriate to participate in the Big Brother show as a Christian. If you have read to this point, you should be able to give an accurate guess to my stance on the matter. But if you still don’t know, my answer is no, I don’t think it is appropriate for you to participate in the Big Brother show as a Christian. Below are some of the reasons for my stance:
– Your Christianity is not Personal
When you become a Christian you are born into a family and just like your biological family, there are things expected from you. Your actions or inactions as a Christian go a long way in affecting peoples perception of your family, so you must represent well.
There are things you can’t say or do, there are places you can’t go to. This is the reason I don’t subscribe to a believer going for the Big Brother show, you represent more than just yourself.
There is no such thing as personal Christianity, whatever happens to a believer whether good or bad affects other believers. If a Christian goes on a show and does inappropriate things, it is not only a taint on the person but on the body of Christ at large.
This was one of the issues Paul had with the man who was sleeping with his father’s wife in 1 Corinthians 5. He starts the chapter by saying that there are rumours of fornication amongst them and this type of fornication doesn’t even exist among unbelievers. Paul felt it was supposed to be a shameful thing and not something to be known publicly of believers. From the tone of his writing in the following verses, I am sure Paul felt that all of his teaching work was in vain.

If a Christian goes on a show and does inappropriate things, it is not only a taint on the person but on… Click To TweetThis is how you make your Pastor feel when you choose to do things that are not expected of Christians. So before you go for the Big Brother auditions, remember that you don’t live your life for yourself and your Christianity is not personal. We are all part of one body and one family. This brings me to my next point.
There are things you can't say or do, there are places you can't go to. This is the reason I don't subscribe to a believer going for the Big Brother show, you represent more than just yourself. Click To Tweet– Your body is not your own.
When you become a Christian, the Holy Spirit enters into you, you receive the life of God. The Holy Spirit in a man is what it means to be born again. Your body has been bought with a price, it doesn’t belong to you anymore, you are no longer at liberty to do as you please with it.
The Holy Spirit in a man is what it means to be born again. Click To TweetWhen you realize that the price that paid for your salvation was the precious blood of Jesus, you would know that no prize money, no matter the amount, can make you discredit the sacrifice of Christ, by indulging in the very things he died for. When God promised never to leave us nor forsake us, he fulfilled his promise by leaving his Spirit to dwell on our inside, till he comes back for us.
When you realize that the price that paid for your salvation was the precious blood of Jesus, you would know that no prize money, no matter the amount, can make you discredit the sacrifice of Christ, by indulging in the very things… Click To TweetGlory, Hallelujah!!!! This is why Paul’s response to the sexual perversions of the Corinthian church in 1 Corinthians 5, was to remind them that they were God’s temple and that they have been bought with a price. This is because a Christian who thinks he/she can do any ‘nasty’ thing or be ‘turningoninown‘ has either forgotten that God lives on his/her inside or has never been taught about it.
God does not live in buildings, but he lives in Christians. Knowing that God lives in you and he is always with you, should make you more conscious of the things you decide to participate in. He goes wherever you go and sees everything you do. So the question is not really if it is appropriate for a Christian to go for the Big Brother Naija show, the question is if it is appropriate to have God in the Big Brother house.
Knowing that God lives in you and he is always with you, should make you more conscious of the things you decide to participate in. Click To TweetThank you for reading, I would like to know your thoughts in the comments section.

Lifegiva- Unashamedly preaching the gospel of Christ!
Just want to say God bless you. I am happy there is still a voice in the wilderness. Though we are in perilous time, there are people with conscience who do not want to do evil for the love of money. Thanks
Good one and quite incisive too. God is counting on and looking for Christians who will stand for the truth irrespective of how sour it might be to a perverted world.
Once again, thank you for this encouraging piece, it’s indeed a call to make Christians to ” Arise and Shine” rather than being ashame of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
