Should Christians Watch Movies With Nude Scenes?

For a long time after I became born again, I struggled with this subject – not just movies with nude scenes, but also worldly music and all those things that are not sinful but are also not godly. Indeed, this is a legitimate concern, a valid question which doesn’t mean you are carnal. It just means you are honest enough to want to learn more about how your faith affects your lifestyle.

Please permit me to talk about this topic together with others (movies with lots of cussing, music videos with a lot of unhealthy sexual content and so on).

There are two major arguments around this subject –

  • Stay away completely from everything that doesn’t have Jesus or God in it
  • Watch whatever you want as long as you read your bible and pray every day.

For the first, I think this is unrealistic and ridiculous. There is no Jesus in the Pizza or whatever other meals we eat. Our dresses also do not have Jesus planted on them. What I am trying to say it, our being on this earth alone is secular enough. And not all secular is bad. Secular in this context means “of the world”

So, while education doesn’t exactly have Jesus as its central theme, it is good for us to be educated even as Christians. Furthermore, some of these movies even though they do not talk about Jesus, are healthy. For instance, movies that talk about hard work, patriotism, love (the healthy man-woman love), movies that inspire you and help you aspire for more. These things aren’t bad or sinful even though they do not talk about Jesus.

And watching “for education or inspiration alone” is not the only context where consuming ‘secular’ contend it permissible. Entertainment is not sinful. Can it be sinful? Absolutely, and so is education and inspiration.

If Jesus doesn’t want us in this world, we would have been raptured right after we gave our lives to Christ. But there is work to be done on the Kingdom of God so we are in this world but we must never forget that we are not of the world.

God expects that even though we are in this world, we live by kingdom principles. Click To Tweet

I am unaffected by what I watch – How true is this?

On the second bit, I’ll start with Proverbs 4:23 – Guard your heart with all diligence for out of it flows the issue of life.

The heart of man takes the form of what it is fed whether the feeding is on purpose or by mistake. This is also regardless of whether the intention is just entertainment.

Therefore, God says to guard your heart – place a filter. Not everything should go in because as they do go in, the same way faith comes by hearing, other things also come by hearing and seeing. 1 Corinthians 15:33 – Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.

Has it ever happened to you before that when you are in a place with some people and after a while, you just begin to mirror those people? I mean, there was a time when I just watched all manner of movies – these movies had cussing as their main language. Before I knew it, I’d be saying something, and a cuss word would fly out of my mouth. This happened without my permission! I didn’t mean to but because of what I had exposed my heart to, those things came out of me anyways. So, you can not completely rule out the effect of the things you see and hear even if you pray every day.

1 Thessalonians 5:22 – Abstain from all appearance of evil.

While we may not be able to run away from sexual content especially in this hyper-sexual world, we can apply a filter especially when it is within our power.

So, while I may not be able to jump off a bus because they are showing a sexually explicit music video or movie, I can choose the movies I watch at the cinemas or in the comfort of my home. Click To Tweet

Also, these movies can lure one into temptation, it is especially more for those who have had or still has a struggle with lust. I’ll tell you guys for free, even as the man of God and woman of God that you are, you are not immune to sexual content in movies. James 1:14 says “But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed…” Lust is fed primarily by what you see and what you hear, that’s how lustful thoughts are formed.

I’ll tell a short story. One day, I was bored and decided to see a movie at home. I scanned my device for new movies and finally settled for one. As it started playing, I realized that it was a cuss-words-kinda-movie. I ignored the first few scenes but about five minutes in, the nudging and discomfort in my heart were so much that I just turned it off and chose to sleep instead. Somethings cannot just happen around you because of the Holy Spirit in you except you choose to ignore. In fact, I should be concerned about you if you feel so comfortable in sexually explicit movies as a believer.

Children see things on the surface, anything goes with them, but adults are more discerning. As you grow, it becomes less of 'Did God say I shouldn’t do this?' and more of 'Is this edifying for me?' Click To Tweet

Conclusively, I’ll say as you mature in God, you become more discerning.

Some things may not be considered sinful, but consecration would not allow me to do them. Click To Tweet

Not everything is a sin, some are weights – unnecessary weights. And about weights, the bible says in Hebrews 12:1 – “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight…” It is not a sin but is it a bonus to your faith or your life as a whole?

In the end, every believer has the Holy Spirit in him/her directing and instructing even in matters like this. Yield as you are led. Remember, the gratification that comes from these movies if you think about it isn’t worth it.
