Wedding Tradition: White Wedding Dress

If your wedding was dated far back 19th century, precisely before 1840, you would have probably worn a red, green, black or any other colour but least likely white. No particular colour was used, but a common factor to most of the then wedding dresses was a wealth of intricate embroidery, beading, expensive fabrics.

In the western culture, quoting from Marryjim.com, “Brides from wealthy families often wore rich colours and exclusive fabrics. It was common to see them wearing bold colors and layers of furs, velvet and silk.” Because weddings back then was not necessarily love, but business and politics, not two people coming together, but the union of two families or even two countries, so your dressing must cast your family in the most favourable light. Still quoting from marryjim.com, “Over the centuries, brides continued to dress in a manner befitting their social status – always in the height of fashion, with the richest, boldest materials money could buy. The poorest of brides wore their best church dress on their wedding day”. Interesting right?

The white dress was not made popular, even few important personalities had dressed in white for their wedding. Not until 1840, the wedding between Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, the Queen’s wedding dress was white and most bride after that opted for this colour as her wedding picture was widely published.

Later on, wearing of white was tagged with purity, that is virginity, but this was not the original reason.

If wearing of white was to depict the pure state of the bride, (I’m sure with a cue taking from biblical revelation of the bride, the church being adorned in white for her groom, Christ). Then shouldn’t the church have chosen another colour for brides who had lost their chastity?

But I bet how difficult this would be, knowing that the true state of purity is of the heart and not a small piece of skin. Judging from the fact that there are some ladies far from being pure even with their hymen unbroken. While some had their taken from them forcefully and even some having being lost are now found and like the bible said, “All things are being made new“, with no record of wrong.

So, let’s assume Queen Victoria hasn’t set the generally adopted “White dress” standard; Ladies, which colour would you have worn, and Guy, what colour would you have loved your bride to wear.

Let the comments roll in. 😉
