What I do When It Gets to Sex Scenes in Movies

I bet like every other child, you were asked to cover your face when a sexual scene popped out whilst watching a movie with an older person, right? ?. If my first guess was right then you either fall into the category of the children that  obeyed or those that peeked through their fingers to catch some action. Either ways, if we are honest, we’ve realized that our elder ones were a little too late as for the majority of us, our minds had already captured the image.

A quick note to big brothers and sisters by the way; Children are generally very curious. As such, they wonder why you get to watch something and they don’t.  Most of the time they wait to see what you were hiding from them after you’re gone. So please, If you don’t want them to watch the sexual scenes, please do not watch movies with sexual contents in their presence (or at all). Remember, we are the example they see.

So, let me share my own story. Before I proceed, you should know that I was one of those children that peeked to see the unallowed scenes till I was about  16 or 17 years old.

That said. One fateful day, I was watching a movie with a big brother and spiritual mentor when a sex scene popped out. As I  was doing faithfully by then, I closed my eyes. When my big brother/ mentor noticed my reaction, he told me that I didn’t have to close my eyes as I needed to learn “how to” for my future marriage?? I know right!

As a good mentee, I stopped covering my face from that day. As if it was not enough, I went further, replaying the scenes over and over again even after the movie was over.

Maybe I didn’t have a serious porn issue or maybe I did (story for another day). The main thing was that it messed me up. I gave myself, my conscience a reason not to cringe out of discomfort when I see two people making out or having sex. After all, it was for education right? But what was happening in my mind?

Wasn’t I supposed to guard my heart diligently? Wasn’t I supposed to flee every appearance of evil? Whatever is pure, lovely, of good report…was supposed to the yard stick right? But no, I believed a lie. I had convinced myself that it was not a big deal.

Thus, the question that arises for us today is this:

What will these words of Jesus “if your hand will cause you to sin, then cut it off so you can enter heaven maimed than risk hell” mean for you and that habit that is gradually dragging you to hell?

For me, it meant deleting my movie folder. For you it might result in breaking up with that dude or babe. It might mean moving out of that apartment or neighbourhood,  or limiting your internet access to social media, school, work and reading lifegiva.com ?. Whatever the case, being proper gate keepers that ensure that harmful substances do not enter our temple, let’s be diligent about this “checking” process through the help of the Holy Spirit.

As for me, what is my reaction when I stumble on a sex scene in a movie? “Ctrl+forward key” – that’s Fast Forward. I’m almost 25, but sexual sin (either mental or physical) knows no age limit. I actually try not to see the kind of movies that contain such scenes. I mean, I still haven’t seen 50 Shades of Grey. The truth is, you can call me whatever you like, but the value of my soul is worth more than an hour 30 minutes of a movie that won’t give me life.

Do I need to learn and have experience about sex before I’m married? This post answers that explicitly SEXUAL NAIVETY

And yes, let me also add, secular music channels (MTV, HipTV, SoundCity…) and music videos, c’mon, are those also too much to give up? Please remember, your eyes and ears are the gates into our lives. They definitely do affect the outcome of our lives and like seeds, they will yield a bountiful harvest. I know that you want the harvest to be worth it, filled and overflowing with the new life you have received in Jesus Christ our Savior.

Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit. So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. – Gal 6:8-9 NLT

Be like children who obey. Do not desire to sin like you used to when you did not know any better. Be holy in every part of your life. Be like the Holy One Who chose you. The Holy Writings say, “You must be holy, for I am holy.”… You know you were not bought and made free from sin by paying gold or silver which comes to an end. The blood of Christ saved you. This blood is of great worth and no amount of money can buy it. – 1 Peter 1:14-19 TLV
