One look at the mirror and you are wondering, “Why is my lip colour so dark, my head too big, my bum is too small/big, my hair too short? Why is my _______ so ______?” (Fill in the gap with all the questions about why your body looks like it does in the mirror.)

One thing I can assure you is everybody with the exception of nobody has at least one or more things they are dissatisfied about in their bodies (Although to different degrees). Cheers!!!  🍻🍻 you are not alone…

So let’s identify a few things you can do when you are dissatisfied with your body (or a part of your body).

There are generally two classifications of body abnormalities that might cause people to dislike their body or a part of the body.

  1. Permanent or genetical abnormality
  2. Temporal or correctable abnormality

Let’s first address the second category.

1. Why are you dissatisfied?

Words/comments and people’s opinions spoken over you (especially when you let your silence confirm them) has a way of joining together and pulling an attack on your mind.

Let me tell you my own part of the story.

My breast had a mind of its own so in High School, it got me a lot of attention, I remember in SS2, on my birthday my classmate (a boy) put satchel milk in my birthday card making reference to my milk industry. Then at home, my aunties will make fun of my tiny body and big breast, my mum too got worried at some point… Lol.

Thinking about it now is so funny, but then it became something I really wanted to change. I felt like if my breast was smaller then I would be more beautiful. Oh, how wrong I was because now I don’t even want to be a size smaller 😉😉.

You would ask what changed?

In my life walk I met people who adored what I was so desperate to change, I saw a few who would give anything to have just a little of what I had, so appreciating my body became easy because I started to see differently.

In my long story, All I am saying is pay attention to why you are dissatisfied about your body. It is possible it is for a shallow reason, or you are just being short-sighted about it. Could it be that you are listening to all the wrong comments about it/you and not the good ones? Just maybe you would learn to appreciate your body better.

2. Exercise your way to satisfaction

There quite a number of things people don’t like in their body that a committed workout plan can correct. There are different workout plans that concentrate on different muscles in the body, for instance, you want to tone your legs you can try Squats, Lunges, Plank leg lifts, Step-ups etc. To enhance or reduce any part of your body from reducing your cheekbone to straightening your legs there are exercises that can help, just Ask Google, but remember to get results, you will need to stay committed or make other lifestyle adjustments, like changing your diet. This brings me to my next point.

3. Eat right.

Poor Electricity, Busy Schedule, Money etc can contribute to our poor eating habits especially in this part of the globe. So if you take 1k to the market you can make soup that will last 3 meals but if you want to buy fruits you may come back with barely enough for a meal. I totally get it but you must understand that to get that body you may need to increase a particular class of food (protein, vitamin etc) or reduce. For the cost, substitution will help so if you need Vitamin C and less fat instead of going for Soursop that is very expensive try a substitute fruit or fruits with the same nutritional value. Another wise move will be to take advantage of seasons when some fruits are less expensive.

4. Enhancements

Yes oh, thank God for Cosmetologist and Plastic Surgeons there are different products and procedures that they offer to help enhance your looks. Some body parts can be readjusted, enlarged, reduced even hair can be transplanted these days just so you get your desired Body.

Warning❗❗❗ Not all products are good for your skin. Not all procedures are safe and medically approved. And not all procedures can be reversed so be careful with your decisions. Seek adequate counsel and have them at a medically certified centre,

5. Explore Other Fashion/Dress Options

Coming to shapes, different shapes look better in different styles of clothing, try different styles of clothes then pick your wardrobe (patterns, shapes, neckline etc) based on how it highlights or conceals your body parts as much as you like them. You can try butt lifters, padded bras, weaves/wigs, shape-wear etc there are a lot of fashion items that can get you that look you want.

Those are my 5 tips people (for correctable faults).

When it comes to the case of permanent, genetical or hereditary faults, take for instance Albinism, one you can do absolutely nothing about. The focus will be loving yourself the way you are.

Oftentimes, people will relate with you or with your deficiency the very same way you relate with yourself. We have seen highly respected and celebrated people with major physical defects, disabilities or hereditary faults, popular singers, scientist, world leaders. Those people are where they are today because they refused to be limited and defined by how they look.

I agree that the society stigmatizes people who look different a lot, but while we are yet to get to the place in the society where we love freely, accept and not define people by their limitations or disabilities, we can decide to dictate our individual response to the world. Yes, they will insult and call you names, but make up your mind that you are more than your skin colour or the size of a part of your body.

Let your esteem flow more from who you are on the inside and from what you have upstairs (you know what I mean) than from how your body looks because this body is fickle plus anything can change it. So it’s too weak to be the basis of your Self Image.
