But… It’s Okay to be Single

It’s okay to be single – In the heat of the “lovers” season, this is a worthy reminder. Society today is quite obsessed about marriage relationships. Sadly, this obsession is creeping into the church. It is important that we learn to discuss singleness wholly- not always ‘in preparation to marriage’ or ‘how to not be single’ or ‘how to get a godly man/woman’. Singleness ought to sometimes be discussed as a journey, a process – not related to the next big thing (marriage).

This is because as with every other thing in life, singleness is a season. And for every season, God has a purpose for it. Hence, there is absolutely no need for you to feel less of a person because you are single or for you to feel incomplete.

Many single people are under self-induced pressure because of the media, what their friends and church aunties/uncles are saying, forgetting that we are all on unique paths- headed towards different destinations.

My job today is to remind you of that and a few more things:

– The fact that everyone else you know is getting hooked up and you’re still single should not pressure you.

One running a marathon and another running a sprint do not go with the same speed. While each of their journeys is valid, they are not the same. Remember that, especially when you’re pressured to think you are running late.

– Marriage isn’t what completes you.

Maybe you hear people say this all the time and you’re tired. I’m sorry but I’ll say it still. Many single people are waiting for some lady or some man to complete them. They are waiting before they start to live the kind of life that they deserve. But you see my friends, what we have is today. Tomorrow is in God’s hands. Many have been called to glory in their single days. Imagine if they waited for someone to complete them before walking in purpose or living the life God wanted for them… Just imagine.

– Marriage also isn’t a reward.

Don’t be feeling like, ‘I was born in the choir of the church and attended Sunday school till my present day, yet I am still single…’ Marriage is not a reward for good works. Don’t be looking at God as though He is mean. Like I earlier said, God is a God of seasons and He knows EXACTLY what He is doing. You just have to trust His timing.

– Finally, God is faithful!

Remember that one time God moved Heaven and Earth, broke protocols for your sake or the sake of someone you know? That God is faithful! He will bring to pass His promise for your life regardless of how long it takes. So, trust Him. Have faith. In your waiting as a single, wait well. Be a good steward of the resources God has put in your hands including your time by living your best life NOW.

During a period like Valentine or any time you are remembered and tensioned about your singleness, don’t waste time feeling sad or lonely because you are single. Put a smile on someone’s face as an extension of God’s love on this Earth. Be kind to yourself and trust in God’s timing for your life.
